Rimer's Game Day Ramblings - Mar. 27

by Jeff Rimer / Columbus Blue Jackets

March 27

It's very obvious the Blue Jackets need to find some offense today as they swing back into action hosting the top team in the National Hockey League, the Vancouver Canucks, at Nationwide Arena.

The Blue Jackets have been shut out in three of their last five games and the offense has dried up. It's team wide - the young players and the veterans alike. Matt Calvert and Jake Voracek have each scored just one goal in the last nine games. Veterans like Rick Nash and RJ Umberger, counted on to lead the Jackets offensively, have had extended goal-less droughts of their own.

The power play that was on fire as recently as the beginning of the month, going 9-for-22, has gone south. The Jackets have not scored a power play goal in their last 28 man advantages! You can't win consistently without a successful power play and there in lies one of the team's problems.

Today's opponent, the Canucks are where they are because of their specialty teams. Vancouver's power play is number one at almost 25 percent, while their penalty killing is third in the NHL at 86 percent.

Roberto Luongo is expected to get the night off, which means Corey Schneider will get the start against his former American League coach Scott Arniel. The Blue Jackets have not named their starter for tonight, but I would think with Garon having played in Phoenix we are likely to see Steve Mason between the pipes.

The game tonight is in HD and begins at 5 p.m. on FOX Sports Ohio, coverage starts with Blue Jackets Live at 4:30 p.m.
