The Blue Jackets after two days off here in Southern California swing back into action tonight in Anaheim.
The Jackets will be looking for their first win on the four game trip after dropping the first two games in Nashville and Phoenix. The team practiced yesterday, made some strategic adjustments and will look to get back on the winning side of the ledger against the Ducks at the Honda Center.
As I said to Coach Scott Arniel Wednesday night on The Coach's Show on 97.1 The Fan going into the four game trip, if the Jackets came home Sunday with four of the possible eight points everyone would be satisfied. Now, in order for that to happen they CBJ must win tonight's game against the Ducks and then head up the 405 freeway and beat the Los Angeles Kings tomorrow night. Both teams incidentally lost their last starts to the Predators.
When the Blue Jackets started this trip they were a point ahead of Nashville and now trail the Predators by five points and as I glance at the standings, the Jackets rival have climbed to fourth in the Western Conference.
Matt Calvert has been recalled will make his NHL debut here tonight and as coach Arniel indicated following practice yesterday, Calvert will see some time in the top six and see some time on the Jackets power play as well. Arniel added, "I like his speed, his quickness and his nose for the net. He is not afraid to shoot the puck."
The coaches took the team out for lunch the other day and then spent the evening watching the Gold Medal game of the World Junior in Buffalo. Arniel was looking for some team bonding and made it clear in saying despite the two losses on the trip so far he does not want to there to be "doom and gloom" around the team with the players hanging their heads. Instead as he suggests, "we play our best hockey when we are upbeat as a group and I want the guys to feel good."
According to TSN Mike Commodore has cleared waivers joining Kyle Wilson in that regard giving General Manager Scott Howson some flexibility with the team's roster. Howson is expected to join the team out here on the West Coast sometime today.
Tonight's game gets underway at 10 p.m. Eastern Time with Blue Jackets Live preceding the telecast at 9:30 p.m. on FOX Sports Ohio.
