Random Thoughts from Bobby Mac - Injuries, Oscars and More

by Bob McElligott / Columbus Blue Jackets

So, I’ve been asked to write this blog for the site. I asked what the parameters are and was told there are none. I’m always interested in doing things with no rules, or restrictions, so I agreed. I’m more used to speaking my thoughts than writing them, so bear with me while I get the hang of this thing. I figured since I have a lot of useless information in my head, I’d just bring you random thoughts from a cluttered mind.

Injuries are part of the game in any sport, but sometimes it seems as though some teams have to suffer more than their fair share of them. I think the Blue Jackets fall into this category. They’ve gone through stretches without Artem Anisimov, Brandon Dubinsky, Derick Brassard, Jack Johnson, James Wisniewski and John Moore. That’s the bad news. The good news is that youngsters like Tim Erixon and Cody Goloubef have gotten a chance to step in and prove themselves. I think Erixon gets better every day and will continue to push for playing time even when everyone is healthy. Cody is making the most of his experience too and trying to solidify a spot in the near future.

I didn’t watch the Oscars because we played that night in Chicago. That would not have kept me from giving my opinions on them. Did you see the Jimmy Kimmel skit where he asked people what they thought about the results the day before the award show aired? It’s amazing what some people will make up just to look cool. Wonder if I could get away with asking the players about games they have yet to play? It would help me get my work done sooner.

I saw Darren Dreger’s report, on TSN, that the realignment plan isn’t going to be a slam dunk. There are still some issues the players have to work out before the plan goes to the board of governors. I’m sure you’re looking forward to the games being played when you’re actually still awake at night. I am too. Although the reported new division would be extremely tough, just think about how fun it will be to watch the Blue Jackets get better while playing some of the elite teams in the league. Plus, I’m sure there will be a few players on those teams that you can’t wait to welcome into Nationwide Arena with open arms (note the sarcasm here). I just hope this gets done relatively quickly.

Finally, a story showing you how things even out in life. Earlier in the week, I went to an electronics store to pick up something I ordered online. A clerk told me I had to wait for the ladies at the service desk to be available. He also told the same thing to the guy who had come in behind me, making sure to tell him that I was first. A few minutes later, the guy did the ol’ end around and went to the lady on the far side, completely bucking ahead. I had a few extra minutes, so I just bit my tongue and waited. A half an hour later I was at the gas station to fill up my car and an extra can. From behind me, I heard someone say “Excuse me sir.” I turned to see a man dressed in military desert camouflage. He said, “I see you have a can to fill and I have some extra gas here. I’d be glad to get that for you.” I explained that I too was using my free points today and thanked him for the offer. To that soldier, whose name I’ll never know, I want to say God bless you and thank you for the service you do for our country. I feel safer at night knowing people like this are still looking out for us all.
