Three first period goals proved to be insurmountable as the CBJ could not overcome a 3-1 deficit in the final 40 minutes-plus at the Air Canada Centre in downtown Toronto, Ontario. It was not Sundin or Tucker that punctured the CBJ hopes of a win, but a covey of others, Colaiacovo, Antropov on the PP and the clincher was the fourth liner Chad Kilger with his 10th of the year. The CBJ got a 2-on-1 tally from Zherdev his 24th, with Peca setting the table with his seventh assist in the past seven games.
Disappointment really stood tall in period two with the CBJ going 0-for-4 on the PP. They had been 6-for-19 coming into the game, but failed to produce many Grade A chances to test Toskala, who proved to be the #1 star of the night. They did not have an opportunity in the first or the third on the PP as they did not get dirty and reckless in a game that needed those elements of want.
It has been the same story for the guys each and every night as the inability to get some offensive support for Nash and Zherdev has not been consistent enough. It is especially difficult for the goaltending duo of Norrena and Leclaire, who have had to play lights out and keep things close. The mental pressure on everybody becomes very draining when scoring is an issue. They are all "heavy games" and taxing to the mind… yes… but that has an inert effect on everything else.
It has been an impressive stat when they do score first goal in the game… they are 20-3-5. They have only been able to accomplish that one time in the past six games. Fans, this is where the teams at this time of the year separate themselves from winning and losing.
Off to Ottawa after the game, where the team will practice at the University of Ottawa during the next three days with a game sandwiched in at the Corel Center. The Sens just came off of a 3-2 SOW vs. the Flyers.
