Now in his third development camp with the Blue Jackets, Cam Atkinson has done it all except for one thing – cook.
Development coach Tyler Wright introduced a cooking class to the week-long camp this year in hopes of helping the players prepare for life off the ice.
"People often forget that these kids are just kids. We're trying to cover all the bases down to what they eat," Wright said. "This is their lifestyle now."
Atkinson said the class was a great addition to the camp.
"It was definitely a great experience," Atkinson said. "It's great for the college guys who come in and don’t know how to cook. They showed us a couple tricks when cooking chicken or salmon and how to mix a salad."
Although he said he had some prior cooking knowledge, Atkinson said he was still able to pick up a few tips.
"I am actually fortunate enough to know how to cook pretty well," he said. "They taught us how to put the oil in and mix it up with vinegar to make a dressing. It was a pretty nice experience, the guys got a pretty good hit out of it. They actually told us what to do, we made our own chicken, salmon, salad and rice and then we got to enjoy it at the end."
As for 2011 draft picks Boone Jenner and Mike Reilly, they also were taught a few tricks.
"I learned a lot of things I didn't know about the kitchen," Jenner said. "For example, I know how to dice an onion now. It's something I could use. It was fun, we ate it and it tasted good so I think we did pretty good."
"We made a really good salad so that was really fun. I took some notes in my head," Reilly said. "Now maybe I'll go back home and cook a few things."
