Oh, December. The division races start to take shape, and contenders begin to separate themselves this time of year, as we approach the midway point of the season. It's always a great month for the game, and this December has been no different. Here are five teams who have enjoyed the most success in 2014's final month.
It's been a bit of a strange ride recently for the Penguins. A mumps outbreak grabbed headlines, affecting a few stars, including Sidney Crosby. But the Penguins carried on, and they have managed to have a very successful December campaign. And as is a bit of a recurring theme on this list, it all starts with some stellar goaltending.
Marc-Andre Fleury has stymied Pittsburgh's opponents this month, as his team has managed a 6-1-3 record. Fleury has played in eight of those games, with a record of 6-0-2, notching two shutouts. Evgeni Malkin has been his usual game-changing self while leading the Penguins offense, tallying nine points this month.
