Post Game Quotes vs. Pittsburgh - Sept. 24, 2009

by Blue Jackets Staff / Columbus Blue Jackets

Pittsburgh Penguins at Columbus Blue Jackets

Preseason – Sept. 24, 2009

Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on tonight's game…

"The downside (of playing young players) is you really don't know what your team is, but the upside is you are giving the depth players an unbelievable opportunity here. It was a hard game today and I thought we did a really good job. We've played three solid games in a row."

Commenting on the physicality of the game…
"I think when you look at it, it's the players who are trying to make teams that are fighting. It's players who are trying to make an image, show they care and are tough enough to play in the league. This happens all the time in exhibition. It’s also about sending a message, too. I thought we answered the bell."

Commenting on left wing Rick Nash and center Derick Brassard
"I think they've got good chemistry. Brassard's a big difference for us and he is for Rick. When you have players that have patience, it seems your whole team has patience. It makes us wonder what we could have been like last year if Derick could have finished the season. He's a confident player right now. They are a good combination… they work well together."

Commenting on right wing Jake Voracek…
He didn't have a lot of energy today. We've played him a lot and in a lot of situations to get his game up to speed. When you are carrying that much more weight, it takes some getting use to. He looks like a man on the ice right now – he’s big, he's strong and he protects the puck."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes

Blue Jackets Center Derick Brassard

Commenting on tonight's game…

"In the first (period) I think our team was flat a little bit, and in the second, I think we played well and our line created some offense."

Commenting on his goal…
"They turned the puck over in the neutral zone and (Rick) Nash went on the breakaway and he took the rebound and threw it in the slot and I was just right there."

Commenting on the past few preseason games…
"I think we got a slow start having our first game on the road but after every game I think we've gotten better, and I think it's a good sign for the season."

Blue Jackets Left Wing R.J. Umberger
Commenting on progressing through the preseason…

"I think it's starting to go our way and we are starting to get a little bit healthier. We had a little bump in the road there, but you know, I think our last three games at home we have come out and I think tonight was our best 60-minute game from start to finish and that's what you want to see this time of the year. You want to see 60 minutes, and improvement in each period, and if we can carry that in two more games, I think that will be a good preseason for us."

Pittsburgh Penguins Quotes

Pittsburgh Penguins Head Coach Dan Bylsma

Commenting on the status of center Sidney Crosby, who left the game in the first period…

"It's training camp and you are getting into shape and not always feeling well and it was more precautionary than anything else. We will see as the days go on and the next game is an exhibition game and the one on October 2 is the first regular season game and judge where he is at and go day-to-day."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"I wasn't real impressed with how invested we were in the game. I thought both our minds and execution level could have been much better, and as a result, we got into a game where we were not playing our game, weren't playing with our pace, weren't getting to the offensive zone a lot. And then we had to kill a lot of penalties in the third and the game got away from us on the scoreboard. It's never a good feeling when you don't play a good game, you don't play your team game and you end up on the short end of it."

Pittsburgh Penguins Defenseman Nathan Guenin

Commenting on tonight's game…

"I don't think we played as well as we could have. It was pretty physical out there, especially at the end with all the fights. I think guys are trying to impress to make the club and stick up for their teammates."

Commenting on his goal…
"Jay (McKee) made a real nice pass to me in the slot. I think their goaltender was screened by one of their players and the puck found the back of the net."

Pittsburgh Penguins Center Sidney Crosby

Commenting on leaving tonight’s game in the first period…

"Its been tight for a couple of days, and I went out there in warm ups and tried it but it was better to stay off of it. I am hoping it is just for a few days. I have hurt my groin before and it is not that bad at all, it's just something that you have to be really careful with. It's kind of a day to day thing."
