Post Game Quotes - Oct. 30 vs. Pittsburgh

by Blue Jackets Staff / Columbus Blue Jackets

Pittsburgh Penguins at Columbus Blue Jackets

Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on tonight's game…

"It should have never got to the shootout. We did everything well but get the game shut down. We're up 3-1, we have to get it shut down."

Commenting on playing better tonight than in previous games…
"Probably tomorrow (we'll feel better about how we played). The tying goal was really fluky. At 3-2, we were still ok. The first goal (in the third period) was too casual… the second one (3-3) was bad break. There are a lot of good things that we did, but you gotta get the game shut down."

Commenting on the third period…
"We're learning how to win and this is a hard lesson, but we're learning them. We took our foot off the gas in the third period. We could have shut the game down by staying aggressive and staying on top of them. We started to play the clock far too early. The whole team competed, but we didn't compete at the right time, when the game was on the line."

Commenting on the power play…
"We could have really put the door down (on the last power play). We could have really hurt them. We still don't have the killer instinct on the power play. That’s the third time that's come back and bit us during the season. We earned the (last) power play and we should have worked and worked hard on it and we didn't."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes

Blue Jackets Right Wing Derek Dorsett

Commenting on playing better tonight despite the shootout loss…

"Sure, you know I thought we played a lot better game, you know a couple of the breakdowns in the third cost us."

Commenting on the third period…
"I don't think we played too casually, but we didn't get the pucks out and we weren't getting the shots. I mean they have a lot of fire power over there and at that point in the game, they're going to come hard."

Blue Jackets Left Winger Rick Nash
Commenting on the improvement in tonight's play compared to previous games…

"It seems to be a lot of different things, but you know there were a lot of positives we can take from tonight. We need to make sure we stick with it."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"Like I said, there are a lot of positives that we can take from tonight's game, but you know we're not closing games. We got the lead in a lot of the games already and just can't seem to close it out. They are the defending Stanley Cup Champions. You know you can tell why they are such a good team and why we need a lot of work with the lead. You know we are a team that needs to learn how to play with the lead."

Pittsburgh Penguins Quotes

Pittsburgh Penguins Head Coach Dan Bylsma

Commenting on tonight's game…

"There were areas of the game we did not play well. We knew that going into the third we had 20 minutes left to put an effort out there to see what happened. That's how we approach wins and losses and periods. The guys went out and played a good third period and hung in there and stuck with it and found a way to pull out the win. It's an important part of what is in that room."

Pittsburgh Penguins Goalie Brent Johnson
Commenting on tonight's game…

"We found a way. We tilted the ice in the third period. The chances were coming; we were missing the net by inches here and there. We kept going and going and we put the puck in the net and then Sid (Crosby) scored in the shootout."

Commenting on the shootout…
"It was pretty easy, their first two shooters missed the net and then (Kristian) Huselius put it right in my glove. They won't always be like that, but I will take it tonight."

Pittsburgh Penguins Captain Sidney Crosby
Commenting on tonight's game…

"We were fortunate to get some good bounces in the third, we worked hard for sure. But we can't expect to play 20-25 minutes of the hockey game and win every night. You have to find ways to win sometimes and we did that tonight."

Commenting on his shootout goal…
"I thought he (Steve Mason) saved me. It was kind of a fluky goal, the puck just kept going. I don’t know if he lost it or didn’t know where it was or whatever. I just tried a quick shot and I though he had it."
