Minnesota Wild at Columbus Blue Jackets

Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on tonight's game…

“We seemed to be around (Minnesota goaltender Niklas Backstrom) but I don't know if we were in front of him. He made a number of saves on breakaways and two-on-ones early in the game and kept them in the game. Both goalies were the best players for each team. There were over 70 shots in the game and for a 2-1 game, that’s a lot of rubber."

Commenting on the start…
"We were a little bit nervous at the start, we made some mistakes in our own zone, but we cleaned it up and as the game went on we got better. It was a good sign."

Commenting on the younger players…
"When your energy is high and you're really emotional, things are going faster than they are (in reality). We got really good minutes from (Mathieu) Roy. Once the game started to slow down, the young guys got better."

Commenting on defenseman Rostislav Klesla…
"He was a good player today. I think we are the youngest team in the league and he wants to be a part of it. He's gone through all the tough times and… he wants to reap the benefits of being on a good team. For us, it's a good thing, anytime you can tie up your core group… that's a good sign for us."

Commenting on the line of left wing R.J. Umberger-Samuel Pahlsson-Jason Chimera…
"We'll play them against the other team's good players – if we get the match-up. Their line is better with forecheck and weight. They all have the ability to score and we expect them to be a good third line. On your team, first and third line is your focus. For us, those guys need to dominate the game down low… that's what we expect."

Commenting on goaltender Steve Mason
"He played good, he was solid. He was a very good player in the game and so was Pahlsson's line."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes

Blue Jackets Left Wing R.J. Umberger

Commenting on special teams play…

"Yeah, you know sometimes if it happens, you know you can't quit on the PP, you've got to keep working and we want to keep them to the outside and try and put as much pressure as possible when their backs are turned."

Blue Jackets Right Wing Jakub Voracek
Commenting on the upcoming three-game road trip…

"Yeah, sure you know it's the schedule. This is going to be a tough road trip and you know, two wins, four points for us would be big."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"In the first period we had three or four shots and we hit the post and you know they decided to change the lines in the third and you know Rusty (Rostislav Klesla) was working hard every shift and he was using his body and he showed it and that is how you score goals in front of the net. It was a perfect shot by Rusty."

Minnesota Wild Quotes

Minnesota Wild Head Coach Todd Richards

Commenting on the Wild’s power play…

"A lot of their chances came on the power play when we were shorthanded. I think there were times when we had pucks on our sticks and looking for plays when we really shouldn't have been. We were taking pucks back in our zone when we shouldn't have been. Some of that is understanding the situation and what is going on and play the game that's in front of us. Not trying to force things or create things that are not there."

Commenting on coaching his first NHL regular season game…
"Before the game, I think there were a few butterflies, it wasn't anything major. When you go into it, you are watching the game and blocking out the environment and what's going on. It was a good crowd but to be honest with you, it felt like I was coaching in Albany and in Albany there are not a lot of people there. For me it was just another game."

Minnesota Wild Goalie Niklas Backstrom
Commenting on tonight's game…
"It sucks to lose a one-goal game. I think we did a lot of good things and came pretty close at the end. It's a tough game but it's a good team and we have to keep working hard and believe in what we are doing and continue to get better every night."

Commenting on facing a lot of shots and allowing two goals…
"You want to stop every puck; there is always a chance to stop the puck. You need to continue to work on that and stop as many as you can. Tonight they got two and that was enough."

Minnesota Wild Right Wing Cal Clutterbuck
Commenting on the loss…

"It's frustrating obviously, especially when they get a shorthanded goal like that. At that point in the second period, we were playing extremely well and taking the play to them. It's a tough one, but I think we competed hard and got 30-plus shots in Columbus’ home opener."
