Post Game Quotes - Oct. 13 vs. Calgary

by Blue Jackets Staff / Columbus Blue Jackets

Calgary Flames at Columbus Blue Jackets

Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on tonight's game…

"We were really playing well (tonight); we earned the power plays that we got. We got stronger and stronger as the game went on. We earned (power plays) because of our hard work and the ability to keep the puck in the offensive zone. We, to a man, competed at a very high level. We rolled four deep (lines) into the hockey game. We played really good today. We reloaded hard and put pressure on them from the back end and that’s the only way you can play."

On team's response to the goal that was not allowed because the whistle had blown…
"I think our players were not happy about that – in our eyes it was a legit goal. We stayed focused. We seem to be able to play in these (close) games and not lose our rhythm. We were comfortable when it was 2-1. We played a very good third period and… we didn't sit back and play on our side of the red line."

Commenting on captain Rick Nash
"He's a smart player and has great patience in the zone. This is as well as he's played for a long time."

Commenting on defenseman Anton Stralman…
"He adds a lot to our team. We haven’t had a right shot, who can snap it from the top, on the right side on the five-on-fours for a long time. He was pretty excited when he scored the goal. He's feeling like if he can continue to play at this pace, there is a spot for him here. He’s a good add for us."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes

Blue Jackets Left Wing Rick Nash

Commenting on tonight's game…

"You know we had a great second period. The first (period) was a little soft, but they were a good two points."

Commenting on the 4-1-0 start to the season…
"Yeah, we aren't used to this. You know it's fun. We've got a great group of guys; everyone's tight and you know it shows on the ice. We're helping each other in games, playing well on the road and it's fun to win."

Commenting on the power play…
"It was nice to get power play goals, obviously we have been struggling, but tonight it was clicking. We were getting shots through, Umberger was at the net giving screens and we were getting goals."

Commenting on playing at home after a three-game road trip…
"We are glad to be back. It was tough playing in three different home openers, so it's nice to come home in front of the home fans and it was a fun night."

Calgary Flames Quotes

Calgary Flames Head Coach Brent Sutter

Commenting on tonight's game…

"Our mindsets were right coming into the game tonight. We had a good first period and then we backed off in the second period. We took a couple of penalties and that changed things for us. In the third we started to make another push the last six or seven minutes. In a tight game like this on the road, we kind of shot ourselves in the foot in the second and that kind of took the momentum away from us there for a while with a couple of quick penalties and a couple of quick goals on their part."

Calgary Flames Right Wing Jerome Iginla
Commenting on tonight's game…

"I thought our heads were in the right places and we had a really good road game going. We talked about being strong defensively and we were that. We ran into penalty trouble giving them 40 seconds of five-on-three. They obviously got two on that one, so there was a lot of momentum for them there. But five-on-five we did a lot of the things we had talked about that we hadn't been doing. We know that we needed more than one goal tonight but our mindset has to be a lot stronger defensively and unfortunately we weren't good enough and didn't get the win."

On allowing two quick goals in the second period...
"I still thought there were some things that we could improve on, there's no question, and we are working on it. They are very good at home, they are going to have some momentum and what we are really working on is to hold the fort and get a push back. I thought we almost did that in the second and then we ran into penalty trouble. They had a good power play."

Calgary Flames Left Wing Eric Nystrom
Commenting on tonight's game…

"When they had that five-on-three that was pretty much the game there. That really hurt us. We were in the game, a 1-0 game on the road, you have to be able to win those games. You go down five-on-three in this League, those are tough to kill off. We couldn’t kill it off. They got some momentum going and we couldn't get it past (Blue Jackets goaltender Steve) Mason in the third."
