Post Game Quotes - Nov. 7 vs. Carolina

by Blue Jackets Staff / Columbus Blue Jackets

Carolina Hurricanes at Columbus Blue Jackets

Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on tonight’s game…

"We played one period today and got away with it. We played really well in the third period and got a great lift from our young guys – (Jared) Boll, (Nikita) Filatov, especially (Steve) Mason and (Derek) Dorsett."

Commenting on the first two periods compared to the third…
"We're playing too slow, everything were doing is too slow. We have to play faster. We really played fast in the third period, it was much better (than the earlier periods). We’ve got to move it faster and play faster to the net. We did it in the third period and had success, and I hope we can feed off that (success)."

Commenting on the team's play…
"We're going to have to play better. We're going to have to find a way to practice with tempo and then play with tempo and the practices for us couldn’t have come at a better time."

Commenting on the play of Steve Mason and his assist…
"This is four games in a row now that he's been outstanding. Geez, he's really playing well right now. He's seeing the puck and he's square (to the shooter). The saves he made in the second period – oh my god. He's really tracking the puck well right now."

Commenting on Nikita Filatov and Jared Boll
"Guys were really happy for both kids, especially Filatov and Boll. Those were big goals for those guys and the players, especially for Boller. We're really happy for him. Nikita didn't have a good game in Atlanta, but stepped up tonight and that's a good sign for us. He’s getting better now, he's getting more competitive and I really liked that line (Filatov-MacKenzie-Boll) and how it looked on the ice. (Filatov) is going to have to get the confidence on the road that he has at home. If he can do that and take another step, he's really going to help us."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes

Blue Jackets Right Wing Mike Commodore

Commenting on his leg…

"No pain at all. It's just about catching up again. It's been a constant catch up. You know, I want to make plays but the legs just aren't following right now. And it's not because I'm hurt at all, it's just I'm out of practice and not in game shape."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"In all honesty that was an awful hockey game for two periods. Terrible. I don't know how many icings there were. No energy, just dead. I think we regrouped though, we talked about it. If we could have one good period we'd be fine. We were only down one because (goaltender Steve Mason) Mase played real well."

Blue Jackets Left Wing Jared Boll

Commenting on goaltender Steve Mason

"Mason was great. He obviously stole that game for us in the first and second, then we managed to get a few goals there in the third."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"(Hitchcock) just told us that we were not playing our game, that we needed to step it up and play the way we know how to play. Like I said, Mason kept us in there until the third period until we could get a few to win it."

Carolina Hurricanes Quotes

Carolina Hurricanes Head Coach Paul Maurice

Commenting on the injury to goaltender Cam Ward…

"I don't know anymore now. I know he went to the hospital. I haven't gotten a call back. It's a significant injury and all I mean by that is I don't have any timeline, but there was a fair amount of blood on the ice. All I know it was on one of his legs other than that I do not know anymore. It is my understanding that he is going to stay in the hospital overnight."

Commenting on losing Ward for an extended period of time…
"He's a critical piece; there is no question about that. That is going to be tough to take."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"We had four scoring chances in the third period. We didn't manufacture as much as we like to but they are a good defensive team. We were right in the game until we allowed those quick goals. That's the way it has been going for us lately."

Carolina Hurricanes Goalie Michael Leighton

Commenting on coming into the game after the Ward injury…

"You always have to come into a game prepared, get your rest during the day and do the things you need to do in case something happens. I didn’t see what happened, all I saw was him on the ground."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"It's kind of what has been going on for us. We score a goal and we were right there again. We are up 1-0 and if we get the next one maybe it's a different game. We seem to be one goal away all the time. They scored and then they scored two more and that was the game."
