Post Game Quotes - Nov. 24 vs. Detroit

by Blue Jackets Staff / Columbus Blue Jackets

Detroit Red Wings at Columbus Blue Jackets

Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock

Commenting on the game …
"It was like three different games. First period, both teams picked their spots and then we played very well in the second but couldn't build on the lead we had and left the door open – they took advantage. Then, they came at us in the third, we kind of ran out of gas because of the back-to-back and the shootout went our way."

"I thought when the game went 2-2, it was very much a playoff game (atmosphere)."

Commenting on Detroit's back-to-back goals …
"We were ok with it. The disappointment for us was that when it was 2-0, we could have had it four or five to nothing. There's missing goals and then there's missing empty nets and we missed three empty nets, but we stayed with it. We held together."

Commenting on shootout …
"We had some good players make some good moves."

Visiting Head Coach Quotes

Detroit Red Wings Head Coach Mike Babcock

Commenting on the team's liveliness …
"We didn't have enough players ready to go at the start of today’s game."

Commenting on the play of goaltender Chris Osgood…
"We had every chance to win. So many opportunities, but the bottom line is, without Ozzie, we wouldn't have even got to the third period, it would have been over."

Commenting on the team’s overall performance…
"There is such a fine line in this league now. If you don't have your whole team show up you're not going to win. I never ever say this but tonight was the first night in a long time that we didn't have enough people to compete, and that's unacceptable."

Player Quotes

Columbus Blue Jackets Center Michael Peca

Commenting on tonight's game…
"It's almost got a playoff-like feel to it. Even the last time they were in here, one team will carry the play for a period of time then a break goes against you and all of a sudden, the play starts going the other way. That's very much what playoff hockey's like. We were able to keep our composure and continue to apply pressure. So did they. They continued to play hard and create chances. It could have gone either way."

Commenting on missed opportunities…
"We could have potentially given that game away when we had that five-on three, not that we didn't create chances. We created a lot of chances. Their goalie made some terrific saves, as did their defensemen. We had our chances. They made some great plays to keep it out of the net. Fortunately in the shootout, we didn’t have to worry about any defensemen blocking shots."

Columbus Blue Jackets Goaltender Pascal Leclaire

Commenting on tonight's game…
"We played very disciplined penalty wise. We played very solid defensively; they didn't get a lot of chances. They tried to push it at the end of the game but for the most part, one of our guys was always in the face of their guys. We cut their speed quite a bit and I think that's why we were in good shape. We had a good weekend."

Commenting on winning a shootout…
"It's a pretty amazing lineup they have for that. It's fun when you win and not that good when you lose. It was good for the crowd. They were into it tonight. They deserved a win at the end. It was fun for them and it was fun for us."

Columbus Blue Jackets Center Manny Malhotra

Commenting on playing Detroit…
"For some reason, playing teams higher up in the standings brings out the best in us. It really shouldn't be that way. Our intensity level and our effort shouldn't be predicated on who we’re playing but it was definitely like a playoff atmosphere tonight and it brought out the best in all of us."

Commenting on Detroit's two goals…
"For the most part, those two goals were pretty much a hiccup. At that point, we felt strong about the way we were playing. We were controlling a lot of the tempo of the game. We were really imposing our game plan. It was a hiccup for 10, 15 seconds but the positive is that we were able to maintain our mental toughness."
