Post-Game Notes

Los Angeles Kings (4) at Columbus Blue Jackets (5)

March 3, 2009 – Nationwide Arena

Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on tonight's game…

"We played a great first period and we were just motoring along and (Los Angeles) seemed to catch wind on that second goal. They picked up the pace and we made mistakes and every mistake seemed to end up in our net."

Commenting on tying the game 4-4 late in the second and the play of the team in the third…
"The fourth goal calmed us down again. For what we've been through, the travel, to come out and play the way we did in the third period was terrific. We managed the game in the third period. We were a tired hockey club and still found a way to play the right way and we did a great job of managing the puck and the game. That goal by Novotny was such a huge goal."

Commenting on center Manny Malhotra...
"He was a horse tonight. He’s been a good player all year for us. He's risen to the occasion. You see it in his play, in his eyes, how much making the playoffs means to him and having success. He dragged people into the fight tonight. A lot of guys were tired and he wouldn't let people die down. His play was exceptional in all three zones and we followed his lead."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes
Blue Jackets Defenseman Mike Commodore

Commenting on battling back after giving up three second period goals…

"That goal at the end of the second period was huge to even it up. The mindset was 'it was a disgusting display in the second half of the second period, but just win the third period and we win the game and we're all set,' so we did."

Commenting on winning "ugly" games…
"As a team, you give up four goals, you can play better. There were a couple of tough bounces. They're not all going to be pretty games. You're going to have to win some ugly ones, and that was kind of an ugly one, but it doesn't really matter, it's two points."

Blue Jackets Center Manny Malhotra

Commenting on his two goals…

"Both were great jobs by my linemates. The first one they did a great job controlling the puck down low, and we’ve been stressing to our (defenseman) we need pucks to the net. So (Aaron) Rome had a great shot, just a quick release to the net, and I was able to get a stick on it. The second goal was, again, the mentality of give the puck to either (Kristian) Huselius or (Rick) Nash and get your stick on the ice and go to the net. That's exactly what I did. They made a great tic-tac-toe play and I was fortunate to be on the finishing end of it."

Commenting on the adjustments coach Ken Hitchcock made during the timeout…
"Obviously it was a bad little stretch of hockey that we had. We started to get sloppy and complacent with the puck. So he just wanted to reassure us that we had to get back to our game – straight line hockey, getting pucks in deep. All our goals came from pressure down low, so we had to get back to that style of hockey."

Blue Jackets Left Wing Raffi Torres

Commenting on the difference in the offense tonight compared to the recent road trip…

"I think just keeping it simple, getting pucks to the net. We said we wanted to get guys in front there, get pucks to the net. We’re not a pretty team. We're not going to score fancy goals, although Manny (Malhotra's) last one there was nice, but other than that, we just have to keep it simple. The uglier it gets, the better we're going to be."

Commenting on feeling healthier…
"Definitely. There's still a couple of nagging things, but it's time to put the excuses aside. This is crunch time right now. Guys have to step up, and push everything aside, and just go out there and play."

Los Angeles Kings Quotes
Los Angeles Kings Head Coach Terry Murray

Commenting on battling back from being down 3-1 in the second…

"You like the way they battled back. There's no question when you get down in the game like that for two teams that had problems with the offensive part of the game."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"At the end of the day, their best players made the plays to win the game. That's what it comes down to in a critical situation. That's the way it supposed to be. Their best players stepped up and got it done."

Los Angeles Kings Center Anze Kopitar

Commenting on tonight's game…

"We got down 3-1 pretty early in the second, but we came back and took the lead. It seemed like we had a good thing going. They almost got a lucky bounce there on the fourth goal and tied the game."

Los Angeles Kings Right Wing Edward Purcell
Commenting on the Blue Jackets start to the game…

"They came out strong. (Manny) Malhotra got the tip to make it 3-1. It was a good shift by our fourth line. It's always good when we chip in. We kind of got things started there in the second."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"We got back to the things we're successful at – getting in the forecheck and trying to create some turnovers. Unfortunately, we didn't come out with the two points. I guess it was a positive the way we bounced back."
