Post-Game Quotes

Calgary Flames (0) at Columbus Blue Jackets (5)

March 26, 2009 – Nationwide Arena (16,327)

Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on tonight's game…

"I thought we had a lot of good performances throughout the lineup, especially in the third period. Our defenseman did a great job against the boards, defending. We moved it well five-on-five and on the power play. Our goalie was a big part of this too, so we needed to show ourselves we could raise our competitive level. We raised our competitive level and got rewarded for it."

Commenting on the playoff race…
"We're not anywhere yet, all we are is in the hunt. We’re not celebrating very long here, we have to move forward and get ready for St. Louis."

Commenting on the penalty kill…

"That was huge (killing off the five on three). That is, what I thought, won the hockey game for us. We killed a lot of penalties today. We were in a vulnerable position and they did a great job."

Commenting on Manny Malhotra, Rick Nash and Kristian Huselius
"They were really in sync with each, which was nice to see. I really like their spacing on the ice and they supported each other really well. They really did a great job."

Commenting on the power play…
"We prefer to look at how we are playing. We had a really good stretch and then the last couple games we were flat. Today we loaded up the shots and it created spaces down below. We really scored three goals, the one at the end (of the power play) again. On the two goals, we tired them out and that's what good power plays do, they tire people out."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes

Blue Jackets Goaltender Steve Mason

Commenting on tonight's game…

"Obviously there's a tendency to step back with a big lead like that, but the coaches made sure that we played the third period with just as much intensity as the first two. The guys did a great job."

Commenting on the team killing off the 5-on-3 penalty in the first period…
"Towards the end of a period you don't want to be letting a goal in. That was a big kill for us moving forward for the rest of the game. We killed it off and that was huge."

Blue Jackets Left Wing Kristian Huselius

Commenting on the top line…

"I thought the whole line played well. We had a lot of chances. We could have had more goals, probably, but it doesn't really matter now. It was a great team effort."

Commenting on playing against Calgary…
"It's a tough team to play against. We knew they played last night, and that's why we wanted to come out hard and keep forechecking hard, and that's what we did. We got the lead and we played well after that. We know we're tough to play against when we got the lead and today we played for 60 (minutes)."

Blue Jackets Left Wing Rick Nash

Commenting on setting a career high for points in a season…

"In a season like this, it doesn't mean much. This is all about the team. It's always nice to have those little feathers in the cap, but it's definitely all about the team. Just keep moving up in the standings and staying in sixth is a lot bigger than (the personal record)."

Commenting on the possibility of playing Calgary in the playoffs…
"It shows what we have to do to beat a team like Calgary. They're obviously a great team. They didn't play their best tonight, but I thought we had a great game and we played our best."

Calgary Flames Quotes

Calgary Flames Head Coach Mike Keenan
Commenting on back-to-back games without a goal…

"Both goaltenders in the back-to-back losses were excellent. (Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre) Fleury was excellent and fortunate for Pittsburgh last night, crossbars and posts. And tonight (Steve) Mason played well."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"I think that we showed some elements of frustration and lack of discipline in certain areas, particularly when it wasn't going our way. Maybe that's their way to express their frustration as a group taking undisciplined penalties that put your team at a disadvantage."

Commenting on (Rick) Nash and (Kristian) Huselius…
"They pretty much had their own way tonight. They are very skilled players and we didn't seem to be able to contain them at all. As a result, like I said, they were able to pretty much have their own way."

Calgary Flames Right Wing Jerome Inginla

Commenting on tonight's game…

"They were good. We weren't really good in any area – our PP and our PK. Our power play has been struggling lately and it hasn't been getting the job done and I thought tonight it could have helped us get back in the game. They were very good, Huselius had a great game so did Nash. Their line was controlling things all night creating momentum for them. On our side, we need to find a way to get better. They were good and our game isn't where it needs to be right now."

Commenting on possible playoff preview with Columbus…
"We knew that coming in. They played well, they played physical, and they were very good with the puck. Juice (Kristian Huselius) was really feeling it tonight and we didn’t make it hard enough on him. He created a lot and so did Nash. From our side, we didn't create nearly enough. It was a great game for them and not nearly a good enough game for us."
