Post-Game Notes

Chicago Blackhawks (3) at Columbus Blue Jackets (4) OT

March 18, 2009 – Nationwide Arena (15,190)

Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock

Commenting on tonight's game…

"Hard, bizarre would be the best description (for this game). Everybody had their moments today, good and bad. We created a lot of chances, especially on the power play with a really simple mentality. We did a really good job in the offensive zone of controlling it."

Commenting on Chicago…
"They are a dangerous team and they make you nervous. If you make a little mistake in your own zone, down low, you pay for it every time. They have good players and their top players were really good tonight. Every game I've coached against them, you're always on edge. You're really going to have to have the attitude you are going outscore them, because I don't believe you can shut them down."

Commenting on center Antoine Vermette…
"He's been solid since we got him. He's an unassuming player. He doesn't stick out until you look at the scoresheet and he's won key face-offs, got the puck out and he's done a good job killing penalties and scored big points. Every night he gets the job done."

Commenting on the penalty kill…
"It was unnerving, but it turned our intensity to a new level. We did much better job killing penalties because our effort, intensity and communication got better."

Commenting on the lines…
"I really liked the way the lines looked today. (Jason) Williams can become interchangeable and play with (Rick) Nash and (Kristian) Huselius."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes

Blue Jackets Center R.J. Umberger

Commenting on the chemistry with his line…

"I think Antoine (Vermette) and I have really found each other a lot. We kind of see each other on the ice where we're at before we get the puck. Jake (Voracek) was a good compliment tonight. (Jason) Williams was the last couple of games. Jake's been playing well, so he added a lot tonight to the line."

Commenting on the game-winning goal…
"Rusty (Klesla) made the play there to get the puck, to forecheck it out of our zone and at that point I got it and was thinking whether to take the guy one-on-one and try to beat him, then I kind of looked to my perimeter and saw Antoine (Vermette) skating as hard as he could. With his speed he's able to beat guys, so I just pulled up and put it to an area where he could skate into it, and then he did a great job of getting his stick on it and scoring."

Blue Jackets Right Wing Derek Dorsett

Commenting on "scoreboard watching"…

"I think when you're in this kind of race everyone checks once in awhile. No one really pays too much attention. You just have to worry about yourself and make sure you're getting the two points."

Commenting on his goal tonight…
"Whenever you're in and out of the lineup that's something that you think can help you stay in the lineup. It was a good play there. (Michael Peca) won the draw and (Marc Methot) got it through, and it was just laying there in the crease and I just got it up above him (Chicago goaltender Cristobal Huet)."

Blue Jackets Center Antoine Vermette

Commenting on tonight's game…

"It's great. That's the fun part of the season. These extra points in overtime are huge for us, and we'll take it. That was pretty exciting out there."

Commenting on scoring the game-winning goal…
"I just tried to work hard and tried to go to the net. R.J.'s (Umberger) a good player, he made a great pass. He put a perfect pass there on my stick and I just tried to get a good shot at it, and I found a way to put it in. Pretty lucky."

Chicago Blackhawks Quotes

Chicago Blackhawks Head Coach Joel Quenneville

Commenting on tonight's game…

"I liked the battle area. We more better, more effective in that area and it wasn't like we were catching up all game, it was a pretty even game."

Commenting on goaltender Cristobal Huet…
"He stopped some breakaways, made some big saves. He was effective and did what he had to do. It would have been nice to get him a win."

Commenting on the team's confidence…
"The confidence is a little bit off. Now we have to think about winning and getting a little more confident at critical times of games."

Commenting on the three-point game…
"You want to avoid these three-point games. Sometimes you don't mind them when they come out in your favor, but we have to take care of our own business and we're not worried about what other people are doing. We have to help ourselves."

Chicago Blackhawks Right Wing Patrick Kane

Commenting on earning a point…

"Obviously, the way we've been playing, it's good to get a point, but you want to go in and win that game, so it's disappointing to not get two (points). You can tell by everyone’s reaction in the locker room that we’re not really happy with the result and we have to get back on track here."

Commenting on scoring the first and playing with a lead…
"It's good to score first. The thing about scoring first is that you like to play with the lead, but they scored right away. Then we were up 3-2 and they scored to tie it 3-3 right away. It's a pretty unfortunate thing, but at the same time there were some good things we can take out of tonight. It's not easy to get out of this funk right now, but we need to get on ourselves about doing the right thing from now on."

Chicago Blackhawks Center Samuel Pahlsson

Commenting on returning to the lineup…

"It was fun to get out there. I had been waiting a long time. It was nice to finally get in the game, it's just too bad that we lost the game, but I was happy I was on the ice again."

Commenting on getting back into game shape…
"I skated a week or so, so it's not terrible. It's always having to get yourself in game shape. It doesn't matter how much you skate or how much you ride the bike. It's always different when you ride the bike. You know the timing wasn't really there, but I will work on it and try to get better quick."
