Post-Game Quotes

Detroit Red Wings (4) at Columbus Blue Jackets (0)

March 15, 2009 – Nationwide Arena (18,685 – sixth sellout this season)

Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock

Commenting on tonight's game…

"Detroit played a really deliberate, focused game. We didn't have the energy or emotion you need to have to play them. (If) they play like this, not many teams are going to beat them. They played with work ahead of skill. It's pretty devastating if you are the opposition. They did the same thing yesterday (in St. Louis). They did the same thing to us… played the puck deep, got it back and we weren't ready for the level of emotional intensity."

Commenting on Blue Jackets play…
"Guys played like there was nothing left. We had a little bit in the second period, if we could have gotten out of the second period. The third goal to us was killer. 3-0 – game over."

Commenting on Detroit's play…
"This has to do a lot with Detroit, because if they play that way, not many teams will beat them and nobody will beat them in a series, if they play (like they did today). Certainly teams are going to be lucky to win games against them."

Commenting on the schedule...
"We'll get in if we play well enough. We don't have the schedule as an excuse. We have days off between games, so we're going to have to play a lot better and a lot more energized than we did today. And we will. We'll play a lot better than we did today. The schedule is in our favor."

Commenting on the power play…
"It was not good today. We were light with the puck. We weren't focused on shooting. We over handled it… we weren't a threat at all. We were standing still with the puck, we weren't moving it. We got out competed against the boards. We'd had some good momentum with it (leading up to today's game), but it was not good enough today."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes

Blue Jackets Left Wing Rick Nash

Commenting on tonight's game…

"It's a tough one for us. They were playing desperate tonight. We gave it to them last time and they showed why they are the best team in the league tonight."

Commenting on Wednesday's game vs. Chicago…
"We have to put this one behind us. It's a big game (on Wednesday). We need the points. We have been playing well lately. We had a little slip tonight but we have got to put it behind us and get ready for Wednesday."

Blue Jackets Defenseman Mike Commodore

Commenting on tonight's game…

"It's a loss. It's not a good loss but it's not the end of the world. That's a good hockey team. We will get ready to play Wednesday against Chicago. Forget about this one and move on."

Commenting on the lack of scoring chances…
"I think we were chasing them all night. We were making mistakes with the puck, they weren't. I don't think we really created too much. (Chris) Osgood played well, but at the same time I don't remember too many great scoring chances. We just couldn't keep up. Handling the puck, moving the puck, they were just a step ahead of us all night."

Blue Jackets Center R.J. Umberger
Commenting on whether or not fatigue was a factor…

"The one thing that I've learned is that you have got to man-up this time of year. Everybody is battling through something. They played last night so there are no excuses. We just have to have a better start and get our legs into it somehow."

Commenting on the upcoming schedule…
"The positive thing is, our schedule dies down a little bit here. We have a day to rest here tomorrow, get out legs back, and have a good practice on Tuesday. We will take that, look at the positives, learn from tonight, and I expect us to come out fired up on Wednesday."

Detroit Red Wings Quotes

Detroit Red Wings Head Coach Mike Babcock
Commenting on responding to the Red Wings 8-2 loss at Detroit last Saturday…

"They're big boys. They're smart. They were at the game, too, and suffered the humiliation just like anybody else. We needed to respond today. They were set up for success. We played yesterday, it's a back-to-back. We knew that. They beat us three-straight times. One was overtime when we didn't have our guys. (Rick) Nash had back-to-back hat tricks. So we had to come in here and play well, and I thought our guys did play well. Columbus had a really good week. They beat good teams this week, and we had a good week ourselves."

Commenting on the team recording over 100 points…
"To set an NHL record is phenomenal. I've only been a part of it four years. I'm proud of the fact that four years we’ve been over the century mark. For us, we're just trying to get better and get prepared for the playoffs. These things are all nice little notes you can put on your resume or you can talk about one day."

Detroit Red Wings Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom

Commenting on tonight's game…

"We wanted to come out and play a real solid road game, not give up too much defensively, play well in front of our goalie, and when we have to puck be creative and take the puck to the net. I thought we really stuck to our game plan today."

Commenting on bouncing back after losing to Columbus 8-2 last Saturday…
"You want to come out and have a real strong effort against a team that beat you real bad. It was something we were thinking about, too. We wanted to carry that momentum we had from yesterday's game in St. Louis, come in and play another solid road game and play our system right, too, and I thought we were able to do that."

Detroit Red Wings Goaltender Chris Osgood

Commenting on back-to-back wins…

"I feel pretty good. I felt good for awhile. I just keep working hard and moving forward, and just trying to stay positive and be sharp, and make sure I do the right things in practice. It hasn't changed from week to week. It's what I'm going to do, pride myself coming down the stretch run."
