Post-Game Quotes

Pittsburgh Penguins (3) at Columbus Blue Jackets (4) SO

March 12, 2009 – Nationwide Arena (19,167)

Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on Pittsburgh's second and third goals…

"We went backwards with the puck twice and nothing good happens when you have a lead and go backwards with the puck. Both (the second and third) goals we went backwards with the puck and then, game on. They started come at us pretty good, in waves."

Commenting on getting the win…
"It was a win that felt like a relief. We played so well for a period of time. Once we caught on to what they were doing, we made an adjustment. From the six minute mark of the first period through the second period we played great. We did everything we needed to do. We did some great things with the puck, then holy smokes."

Commenting on the fans…
"The building wasn't loud enough because we had folks in the wrong colored sweater here, too many of them. The building was louder last game because we had all Blue Jackets' fans, somebody let in those other people today and it screwed up the sound level."

Commenting on forward Jason Williams…
"I think he's competing hard right now. He's been a great add for us. He's helping us a lot in every aspect, power play and five-on-five."

Commenting on the Goaltender Steve Mason
"This morning (we knew he was going to play). He's got a cold and he's going to be ok. He could play tomorrow if we wanted him to."

Commenting on the play of center Antoine Vermette...
"Solid. You just expect him to play well every night. He's not afraid to try things offensively. He made a great play (behind the net on Williams' goal), his work ethic, his tenacity on the puck created a goal for us."

Commenting on the past three games…
"Look what we beat in the last three games… beat Detroit, beat Boston, and beat the hottest team in the National Hockey League, so it's hard. Every game is hard, there are no breathers. The game in here on Sunday isn't going to be a day at the beach either. It's the way it is right now. You have to find energy and we need new people stepping up. We got to keep going and keep rolling."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes

Blue Jackets Center Antoine Vermette

Commenting on his instant success with the team…

"Yeah, but you got to give credit to the other guys. That's not fair saying I adjust quick. Guys are playing the right way, playing hard. It makes me look good being in the right spot at the right moment, but that's a team effort. No doubt about that."

Commenting on his assist on Williams' goal…
"That's a set play. I like to go down to my knees like that. (joking) No, not at all. I tried to get there as quick as I could. I thought (Jason) Williams was there, he was in great position. It wasn't a great pass, but he took it and had a good finish on it. That was a big goal for us."

Blue Jackets Goaltender Steve Mason

Commenting on giving up the three goals in the third…

"Obviously it's disappointing to give up the three goals. As a team, it's frustrating to give up a lead like that. We're not going to get away with that too often."

Commenting on keeping his composure…
"It doesn't matter to me what the score is or what happens during the game. My demeanor never changes out there."

Blue Jackets Left Wing Kristian Huselius

Commenting on the win…

"We played well for two periods, and then in the third we were standing still and they took it to us. It's always tough to come back when they got the momentum. They scored two quick ones, but obviously (Steve) Mason made some great saves and we got the win."

Commenting on getting the win in front of the home crowd…
"It was great. The fans have been great lately and hopefully it can continue."

Pittsburgh Penguins Quotes

Pittsburgh Penguins Head Coach Dan Bylsma
Commenting on battling back from a 3-0 third period deficit…

"This game was a situation where there were times that we played well and there were times we didn't manage the puck well. When we made the decision to get to the offensive zone – whether it was by speed or by chipping it – the game turned in our favor. The guys battled hard. We did get a point. But I think there is a lesson to learn from this game for sure."

Commenting on losing in a shootout…
"You don't want to lose a point to someone that you're in a race with and so losing it to Columbus is better than someone we are in a race with."

Pittsburgh Penguins Center Sidney Crosby

Commenting on tonight's game…

"They played strong defensively. We didn't get a lot of speed in the first two periods. We played into their hands turning the puck over a lot. And in the third we put some more pressure on them, got some turnovers and some good goals."

Commenting on playing in Columbus…
"We don't get here that often but it was a great atmosphere out there. That is the type of game that you expect this time of year when a lot of teams are competing for points. The intensity was a little bit higher and you could hear that in the crowd as well."

Commenting on the play of Columbus goaltender Steve Mason
"I thought he (Mason) played well. It's no secret that he is a great goalie and he played well again tonight."

Pittsburgh Penguins Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury

Commenting on earning a point…

"It's just nice to see the guys battle back there in the third. The one point is huge for us after being down three."
