Detroit Red Wings at Columbus Blue Jackets

January 27, 2009 – Nationwide Arena

Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on tonight's game…
"I thought we were the better team in the first period and they were the better team in the third period. They turned up the volume. We've always played well in the first two periods against them… and tonight we got away with one. Our best player answered with a great goal."

Commenting on playoffs…
"We can see that we're not just looking at, if we get lucky we might squeak in (the playoffs). We're looking up and seeing that people are catch-able. We’re not pretending we’re in a race; we're in a race, a battle and the players recognize (the situation). Games matter, every point is important and he’d be the first to recognize the complete change over in the fans. There's a different atmosphere in the building and they have a sense of urgency, just as we do."

Commenting on captain Rick Nash
"He, more than anyone, recognizes the opportunity in front of us and he sent the other players a clear message, the message we wanted the team to receive. He wants to finish the job and make a run for this thing. He's only had one poor game in the last 12 (games). His play is exactly the same every night, he's consistent. The thing that is helping us are his starts – Rick's able to start at a high pace and others are able to tag along. And that’s what leaders are able to do. It's helping our team gain confidence and energy."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes
Columbus Left Wing Kristian Huselius
Commenting on the importance of the second half of the season…
"When you put yourself in a good position and you're right in the (playoff) hunt, you don't want to let it slip away now. We worked hard with injuries and everything, and we’re still fighting for a playoff spot. We talked about we have to make a push; we have to get better, because it's going to be tougher down the stretch here. It's a good start against one of the best teams in the league."

Commenting on Detroit missing some key players…
"It's part of hockey. We had our injuries, too, and we battled through it and won some big games. Anyways, that's just the way it is, and we'll take the win; it's a good start because it's always tough the first game after break when you haven't skated it a couple days. So it's a good start for us."

Columbus Goalie Steve Mason
Commenting on his days off for the All-Star break…
"I feel great now. It was a good break to get away from the game for a little while. I think everybody's come back re-charged. Maybe with the exception of (Rick) Nash, who didn't really get the break, but he showed he really didn't need it."

Commenting on the mental and physical aspects of resting…
"A little bit of everything. You get away from the game, you don't have to think about it for four or five days, and your body gets the rest without having to be on the ice every single day."

Commenting on the best thing about his break…
"I got a home-cooked meal at my grandma's house. That was probably the best thing."

Columbus Left Wing Rick Nash
Commenting on leading by example…
"I try to do that every game, but things just went my way tonight. It was a great team effort. That's one of the best teams in the league and for us to be down a couple of times and come back, it was a good two points."

Commenting on the optimism of the second half of the season…
"This is kind of the first time it feels real for me here in Columbus. It's so important after this break; we got some guys healthy and we had to come against a tough team that was going to play with a lot of energy. The two points is huge tonight."

Commenting on the "real" feeling…
"It does, but all the moments felt real (in previous seasons). We've been on 10-game losing streaks and they’ve felt pretty real, too. This is a lot better of a real feeling."

Detroit Red Wings Head Coach Mike Babcock
Commenting on earning a point in tonight's game…
"We came in here tonight and we knew we were going to be a little short staffed but that's the way life is… The other thing is we were playing a team that we knew was going to play hard… All in all, I thought we had a good effort and we took care of the third period really well, had every chance to win the game and we didn't win the game. (Marian) Hossa had the puck with the net empty and didn't shoot it in the net."

Commenting on Blue Jackets left wing Rick Nash
"He scored three goals. I mean, he is a good hockey player … Your best player has to be your best player, that's why you pay them all the money. And if they aren't your best players then you aren't going to win."

Commenting on the power play…
"For example, when we had our second power play tonight, we had no Pav (Pavel Datsyuk), no (Henrik) Zetterberg and no (Nicklas) Lidstrom, it's not quite as smooth on the power play. That's just the way it is."

Detroit Red Wings Player Quotes
Detroit Red Wings Center Valtteri Filppula
Commenting on losing Henrik Zetterberg leaving the game due to injury…
"When you lose that kind of player it's always tough for your team but we still had good chances to win the game but we weren't able to do it."

Commenting on getting traffic in front of Blue Jackets goalie Steve Mason
"If we don't get traffic on the net he is going to be out of the net and make the save. He played really well."

Commenting on Blue Jackets left wing Rick Nash’s hat trick…
"Three goals. He is a real good player. Obviously, he skates well and protects the puck and can score so that is a good combination to have as a player. He played a really good game today."

Detroit Red Wings Right Wing Mikael Samuelsson
Commenting on the loss of Henrik Zetterberg in the first period…
"He went off in the first period and obviously that doesn't help our team, but at the same time we've got a lot of other guys who got a little more ice time."

Commenting on the Blue Jackets…
"They have a good team over there. It's no question about it. It's a hard working team. I thought we played a decent game but we are obviously not satisfied with only one point."

Detroit Red Wings Right Wing Dan Cleary
Commenting on tonight's game…
"I thought both teams had quality chances. It was a pretty even game. I just think we didn't get enough second opportunities on (Steve) Mason and that was the difference."

Commenting on Blue Jackets goalie Steve Mason
"He is a very good first shot goalie, like a lot of goalies are, but you have to get second opportunities – even third – just to wear them out and get them out of position. I thought that we did a good job being as shorthanded as we were up front."
