Post Game Quotes - February 3, 2009

by Blue Jackets Staff / Columbus Blue Jackets

St. Louis Blues (4) at Columbus Blue Jackets (2)

February 3, 2009 – Nationwide Arena

Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on tonight's game…
"We want the game to be easier than it is. The third period was the first time we decided to dig our heels in, like we were (at beginning of January). We've decided to play a different game and I think it's painfully obvious to everyone that it's not working. The age old adage – we would like to play with skill ahead of work. The game could go either way, but we're not going to win very many games playing the way we played the last two games."

Commenting on the start of the game…
"We managed the first period really well, but we're making really poor errors in our own zone with the puck, at critical times in critical places (on the ice)."

Commenting on St. Louis' goals…
"The goal we gave up at the end of the first period was ridiculous. To give up a goal in that position is not right. Everything (the other team) shoots seems to go in our net right now. When you make mistakes like that, it's not right."

Commenting on Steve Mason's play …
"He didn't have a lot of action. He was alright."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes
Columbus Left Wing Rick Nash
Commenting on tonight's game…
"I thought the third period we were the better team, but we took too long to get into the game. The first two periods weren’t good enough, and we came along in the third, but they were just sitting back."

Commenting on playing from behind at home…
"We're not used to it this year. In the past we've been used to it. When you got your home fans in front of you, you definitely don't want to be playing catch-up. You want to have the lead, and tonight we didn't do it."

Columbus Center R.J. Umberger
Commenting on tonight's game…
"You don't want to play that way, not this time of year. You want to come out strong. We finally decided to play the right way in the third; we out shot them, we peppered them pretty good, but you can't do that. You got to start the game like that and play the full 60 minutes. If we don't just go through the motions the first two periods it could have been a different game."

Commenting on the slow start to tonight's game…
"We definitely waited. We're just not playing the style we were – aggressive, getting the puck in deep, just using our size and our speed to outwork them. We're trying to play a skill game. In the third period we did everything right; we got it in deep, we got pucks to the net, we played hard, but sometimes you come up short when you just play one good period."

Columbus Center Michael Peca
Commenting on tonight's game…
"The third period we had a lot of good chances. We didn't get it in, and it mounts a little more frustration."

Commenting on bouncing back from consecutive losses…
"We just have to come back to work tomorrow. I'm sure we'll look at some tape or we'll have some discussions about areas of the game that need to get stronger in order for us to win hockey games, or at least put us into positions to win hockey games again."

St. Louis Blues Coach Quotes
St. Louis Blues Head Coach Andy Murray
Commenting on tonight's game…
"We played really well last night in Detroit and we're disappointed with the (shootout) loss there. There was some determination to get a split on this road trip. (The) guys battled and scrambled, did whatever they could do."

Commenting on the first two periods compared to the third…
"They didn't have a lot of chances the first 40 minutes but they certainly did in the third. (Chris Mason) was very good tonight. That's what they pay those goalies for."

St. Louis Blues Player Quotes
St. Louis Blues Goaltender Chris Mason
Commenting on his play…
"I feel great out there actually. It's a good feeling when you get that back … you just want to keep playing and just keep rolling as long as you get that feeling."

Commenting on the win…
"It's a combination of guys playing well and figuring out the style of hockey that we need to play to win. We played teams really close and finding ways to lose and I think now we're finding ways to hold on to games in the third period."

St. Louis Blues Right Wing Brad Boyes
Commenting on tonight's game…
"We've played back-to-backs all season. We're through the midway point. There shouldn't be any excuses. For us to be successful throughout the whole season, we gotta learn to play in the offensive zone in the third period."

Commenting on goaltender Chris Mason…
"He played real good. We sat back and he shut the door. And that's something that he's been doing real well for us lately. He's been a guy that's been stepping up."
