Post-Game Notes

Minnesota Wild (6) at Columbus Blue Jackets (3)
April 11, 2009 – Nationwide Arena (19,013 – seventh sellout this season)

Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on tonight's game…
"The game changed for us on the (first) shorthanded goal. We gave the puck away on the boards on the shorthanded goal and they got momentum after that. Then it was a track meet. We're not playing very well right now. We've played with no energy."

Commenting on the playoffs…
"We'll take a day off tomorrow and we'll be back to work on Monday. That might be the best thing to happen to us, the sense of urgency might be there. The best way to describe (playoff hockey) is it is played with a sense of urgency on a shift by shift basis. Played with a sense of desperation, especially in the first round until teams get worn down, where the teams that are engaged play like it's the first and last shift of their lives. They play the whole game like that and the teams that can do that stuff and have the character to play like that and the self discipline to play like that, are very successful. It is played at a very high, high emotional pitch."

"It's all about who's in and not who is out. Who is out, is out. That's why you have 30 players – we'll have some guys up here from Syracuse. A couple guys might be able to step up and help us right away – Blunden, Picard are playing terrific. If they look like they can help us, then they will be in and somebody will be out. That's just the way it is (in the playoffs)."

Commenting on the team's play heading into the postseason…
"We've taken some really poor penalties the last two games. In both games we've shot ourselves in the foot with poor discipline."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes
Blue Jackets Left Wing Rick Nash
Commenting on finishing the season 0-2-0…
"It would have been nice to win the two games, or get a point, but it is what it is. The season's over and we're still in the playoffs."

Commenting on getting ready for the playoffs…
"It's a new season. In the big scheme of things, we had a great season. We made the playoffs; we achieved our first goal. Now it's a new start for us."

Blue Jackets Defenseman Mike Commodore

Commenting on the team’s playoff positioning…
"It’s a disappointing loss, especially since we had a big crowd. It would have been nice to win. But, honestly, who cares? You finish sixth, seventh, or eighth, you don't have home-ice advantage anyways. If you want to go far in the playoffs you have to go through the top seeds anyways. I might not sound excited right now, but come Monday, we're going to be ready to roll and excited to play whoever we're playing."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"We came out well, then we took some penalties. The first goal was bad luck. (Manny Malhotra) tried blocking the shot, and it goes in your own net. It's tough. Then we gave up a shorthanded goal against, and it just kind of accumulated from there. Minnesota played well, but at the same time, we made some mistakes and kind of shot ourselves in the foot."

Blue Jackets Center R.J. Umberger

Commenting on the final stretch…
"You can't carry that in (to the playoffs) because then it's all for nothing. We got to regroup, have a hard practice here, and just start going positive again. This is a good team. We can't start questioning ourselves right now. We're a good team. We've proved it all year."

Commenting on the playoffs…
"Playoffs bring something new out in everybody. It's a fresh start whether you had a good year or a bad year. You don't know how many times you'll get there in your career so you got to take advantage of it, go out there and give it all every night. If you're a true athlete and competitor it’s when you want to play."

Minnesota Wild Player Quotes
Minnesota Wild Head Coach Jacques Lemaire
Commenting on tonight's game…
"The guys played well. I think maybe we had a little tough start. First one was a turnover in the neutral zone, our defenseman was a little back on that and (Rick) Nash got a great shot. And the second one was a weak goal. But we kept playing, we just kept playing, there was not panic. I don’t know if it was because it was last game but they never panicked. They just played and we got a couple of breaks, back in the game and won it. I was happy with the way the guys performed."

Commenting the mood of the team…
"They were really quiet in the room before the game, very loose. I know it's because we're not in the playoffs. The guys wanted to be there. I think they tried to be there this year. As I mentioned many times, we missed a couple of key players and you can see we have a better team with those guys back and we still have two guys that can help this club quite a bit."

Minnesota Wild Center Mikko Koivu

Commenting on tonight's game…
"I think even though we were down 2-0, we played a good period there. There was not a lot we could do about it; we talked about it at intermission. Then in the second period we got our goals and got back into the game."

Commenting on his goal…
"Well it was just an empty netter, just tried to throw it on the net and it went in, lucky bounce there."

Commenting on the difference in second period…
"It's tough to tell. Obviously when you get a goal early in the period you get some confidence, so I think that is a big part of it."

Minnesota Wild Right Wing Marian Gaborik
Commenting on missing the playoffs…
"We never quit. We were talking about that we needed to win these three games, and we did that. Too bad we didn't get help from other teams, but we can't control that. We can only control what we are doing and I think we left everything out there. We can be proud of ourselves to finish these three games strong. A little too late, but I thought we left everything out there."
