Post-Game Quotebook: March 19

by Rob Mixer / Columbus Blue Jackets

MARCH 19, 2013

We take you around the Blue Jackets' locker room and into coach Todd Richards' post-game press conference, with post-game quotes from tonight's game:

Head Coach Todd Richards

"Bobby gave us some good saves early on. I didn't think we had the intensity or the focus for the first ten minutes of the game. And then I think we started to get into it, but Bobby made a couple of big saves for us."

"I think you could sense it on the bench – we had a couple of good shifts in the offensive zone right before Mark Letestu scored. To me, I sensed a little bit of confidence in the group – just offensively with the way we were going. Thought we defended ok, but I still think we lacked some of the intensity that we needed."

"We're going to have to be better Friday – intensity-wise, focus-wise. And we're certainly going to have to be better on Saturday."

"It was big. We've been winning games, but on some teams, we've only been gaining one point. And all we can worry about is getting the W. It's great to get it in regulation. Now we can enjoy it tonight, enjoy it tomorrow, and then we gotta start getting ready for Calgary. It's a good stretch for us, a really challenging stretch."

"We relaxed. It's disappointing too because our goaltender has been so good. I don't think Bobby was as sharp as our previous games, but I think it's tough to play at that level consistently."

"As a group, we got up 4-1 and the pace was just kinda going up and down the ice, and their second goal, we relaxed. We kinda stood around, and one goes in. They come out later, and maybe more of a scrambly goal, and the final 1:13 was a game. And it shouldn't have been that way."

"We're ok. That's why we had a three-goal lead."

"There's a lot more confidence in the room, but to me, we still have to be better. We still have a lot to prove for being as close as we are to a playoff position. Some teams still have games in hand, so that's gonna change."

"We're just as close as some of the bottom teams, so there's not a lot of breathing room. We just gotta keep focusing on what we do and what we do well, and then go out and execute them."

"Vinny's a guy that makes… consistently, he might be our game-in and game-out best guy as far as creating offensive chances for us. Tonight was an example. It's great for him and what he has achieved in his career."

"I like that our power play in the third period when the game was on the line. It was a 2-1 score – that's a huge power play. That was a big, big goal for us."

"You can see how it affected their team. It affected our team in a positive way."

"We had some guys reach some milestones and special occasions. We can enjoy them a little more because we got the win."

Vinny Prospal

501 points for career-- what it means:
"It's awesome, I'm not gong to sit here and say it doesn't mean anything, its great. I have been fortunate, fortunate to play in this league for sometime, I would never imagine I would come here in 1993 to North America that I would be sitting here at age 38 and also be playing… very fortunate to be a part of this game and be a part of this organization right now."

Speaking to the success of this team:
"Confidence, ability to win close games, that's what the league is all about. The good teams even when they don't play there best they find a way to win. In the previous games we have been able to win the close games."

"You need to learn how to win … its not easy for other teams to come into this rink, or face us because they know they are in for a battle."

"We play the right way and the hard way, its not easy for anybody to play against us."

What kind of adjustments did the team make as the game went along:
"They are going to make a push…they aren't just going to hand us two points."

"It's something that we have to learn, especially when we play in our rink, we have to play our way. Don't give the other team a chance to play their way."

Talking about the standings:
"We have managed some points but we have also given some away. We should just worry about our club, about the way we play about where we are and just go from game to game."

"We should feel pretty good about ourselves right now, come Friday night when we play the Calgary Flames, we should be ready for a tough team coming in, because they aren't just going to hand us two points…"

Fedor Tyutin

Opening Statement:

"Special when we get two points against a team like Nashville… kind of our rival."

Speaking about not having to bail Bob out:
"We scored 4 goals, don't remember when we last did that, good for our team, a good confidence builder, once again Bob made a few great saves when the game was tight"

"We take it day by day, we are not thinking about what's going to happen each month, we just come to the rink every moment and work as hard as we can and enjoy the moment."

Mood in locker room:
"We have a fresh start, guys have been more positive that we can get out of the funk that we have been in at the beginning of the season."

Leading scoring defenseman in franchise history:
"Huge, great feeling for me, and accomplishment … I'm just happy."
