Open Letter: Time to shine, 5th Line!

by Matt Pfeffer / Columbus Blue Jackets

ALL STAR WEEKEND IS FINALLY HERE!

After three seasons of waiting, and waiting, and waiting, the hockey world’s eyes will be on Columbus, Ohio. Hockey fans, personalities, media, alumni, and the game's brightest stars will all converge in Columbus to take in what this great city has to offer. Anyone who’s anyone in the hockey world will be here and it's time for everyone to see what we’re about here in central Ohio.

The hockey world got a taste of what Columbus is starting to become last April when the Blue Jackets made some noise in the playoffs, along with the rocking atmosphere created by the 5th Line. It hasn’t always been merry and joyful here in the capital city; we've have had our struggles as a franchise, but the 5th Line has persevered through those times. Now, we have an opportunity to prove Columbus belongs on the world's stage. We have a chance to showcase a city that a lot of the world hasn't experienced or come to appreciate yet...but that's about to change.

This weekend, the spotlight is on, Columbus. It’s here and we have to use it to our advantage. It's time to show the naysayers that Columbus has the same clout as the other major hockey markets.

How do we do this?

First, we show them our passion of this sport we love. We'll be at every event going on during All Star Weekend: NHL Fan Fair, red carpet entrances, the Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition, All-Star Winter Park (pres. by Worthington Industries) and the Honda All-Star Game. Even if we don’t have tickets to some or all these events, we show up in the Arena District and participate as much as we can. It's our duty to carry that same enthusiasm everywhere around all weekend.

Second, we treat everyone coming to this celebration like our hockey brothers and sisters. We are one giant hockey community and let's experience this unique, exciting opportunity together. Whether your allegiances are to New York, Detroit, Pittsburgh, or Columbus, we are all in this together and celebrating hockey.

If we can do these things and do them well, everyone visiting Columbus will come away impressed with our community and our city. They will go back and tell their family and friends how great of a city Columbus is, and how well they were treated. Those are the personal, lasting impressions we want hockey fans to leave with when they leave Columbus.

The spotlight is on us, 5th Line. Let’s go out there and shine!

- Matt
