Novak Named PlanetUSA AHL All-Star

SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the American Hockey League has selected defenseman Filip Novak for the PlanetUSA AHL All-Star Team for the 2007 Rbk Hockey AHL All-Star Classic. It is the third time Novak has been selected to the AHL All-Star Team.

Novak, 24, has appeared in 32 games with Syracuse this season, tallying 2 goals, 18 assists and 51 penalty minutes. He has appeared in four games with Columbus this season, recording four penalty minutes. In 224 career AHL games with San Antonio, Binghamton and Syracuse, Novak has tallied 21 goals, 91 assists and 272 penalty minutes. Originally drafted by the New York Rangers in the second round, 64th overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, the Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic native, Novak was signed as a free agent by the Columbus Blue Jackets on August 9, 2006.

Novak made his first appearance on the All-Star team and All-Rookie team in 2002-03 and then granted the honor of his second All-Star appearance in 2005-06.

In 2001-02, Novak was named as an WHL East All-Star team selection and represented the Czech Republic at the 2002 World Junior Championships, posting two assists in seven games.

In thirteen seasons, Syracuse has had 20 players participate in the AHL All-Star Classic. Previous participants include Lonny Bohonos and Scott Walker – 1994-95, Brian Loney – 1995-96, Larry Courville and John Namestnikov – 1996-97, Mark Wotton and Robert Dome 1997-98, Boris Protsenko and Valentin Morozov – 1998-99, Harold Druken and Chris O’Sullivan 1999-00, Mike Gaul – 2000-01, Derrick Walser and Duvie Westcott – 2001-02, Karl Goehring – 2002- 03, Aaron Johnson – 2003-04, Alexander Svitov – 2004-05, Andy Delmore and Mark Hartigan – 2005-06.

The 2007 Rbk Hockey AHL All-Star Classic will take place at Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto, home of the AHL’s Marlies. The event features the 2007 CCM AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Sunday, January 28 (7:00 ET) and the 2007 AHL All-Star Game on Monday, January 29 (7:00 ET), and will be televised live on Rogers Sportsnet in Canada and on a network of regional broadcast partners in the United States.

Of the 394 players to take part in the AHL All-Star Classic since 1995, more than 93 percent have competed in the National Hockey League, including Patrice Bergeron, Brad Boyes, Daniel Briere, Jonathan Cheechoo, Pavol Demitra, Rick DiPietro, Patrik Elias, Ray Emery, Miikka Kiprusoff, Kari Lehtonen, Ryan Miller, Dwayne Roloson, Marc Savard, Martin St. Louis, Jason Spezza, Eric Staal, Steve Sullivan and Kyle Wellwood.

The Crunch travel to Rochester on Friday, January 12 for a 7:35 p.m. match-up. Syracuse returns to the War Memorial at Oncenter on Saturday, January 13 to host Rochester.
