July 1st Canada Day

by Bill Davidge / Columbus Blue Jackets

July 2

Two more Canadians were brought into the fold during the wild spending spree on opening day of free agency. Blogs by Mike Arace and Rob Oller make the point that the CBJ are going to be better with the additions of Mike Commodore and Raffi Torres. I agree whole-heartedly and like what the players bring to a team, especially a squad coached by Ken Hitchcock.

Utilizing terminology from Hitch’s vocabulary, they are “heavy” players that “compete” each and every shift. Commodore can play a game that the fans of Columbus are going to love. He can hit, he can get nasty in “high traffic” areas and he “pays the price.” Watching Mike while a young member of the North Dakota Sioux, he also proved he could shoot the puck. He is a great addition and will fit into the CBJ roster with ease. He can plan on seeing 25+ minutes once he gets in tune to expectations from the staff.

Raffi Torres was hurt last year with a knee injury… Do not be worried fans!! He “brings it to the table” every night. A one-time teammate of Rusty Klesla in Brampton during his junior days, he played every game the two previous years. Every indication has the knee is fine and Raffi is ready to go. He will be a fan favorite and has a chance to take it to another level.

Nice additions to the lineup, but stay tuned… A center and a puck moving defenseman are still a must to secure the needs of the roster. Good work so far staff. Great patience with the money and smart moves to make the team better; keep up the good work!
