In Movember, everyone can make a 'stache look good

Jody Shelley on the importance of raising awareness for men's health issues

Wait…why stop shaving?

"Movember" is a month-long initiative each November to promote awareness and raise money for men's health. The Movember Foundation says the mustache is their ribbon, and is displayed proudly to bring awareness to men's health.

A couple of years ago I went with the mustache for Movember. It's a great look, but takes a little adjustment from family, friends, strangers and even the man looking in the mirror. But once the look is owned and the upper lip is buried, the glances of bewilderment towards the "confident man with the duster" are frequent and ego-boosting. Having rocked a "muzzy" a few times for Halloween costumes in the past, the move to just carry it right through November is very convenient and a nice head start to achieving a thicker bushier lip warmer.

As we get into the heart of November, you'll start to see these dusters take better form around the arena and in your community. Some will be better than others. I've had teammates use hair dye and take out the light ginger tint and turning it into a jet black crumb catcher. Imperial, Painters, Fu Manchu, Handlebars, the Walrus or the Toothbrush - it's important to find your style and own it.

No matter what style you decide to go, the patches of unshaven hair below your nose are to remind us all that we need to take care of ourselves. That might mean watching what we eat, fitting in a workout, or even going for that exam that we have been putting off for weeks or even months.

So bring awareness and bring on the stubble, as we start this growing together, to create conversation, bring on the spotlight and maybe even a new full time look…you never know.

Happy Movember!
