Jackets Face Defending Champs in Detroit

by Jeff Rimer / Columbus Blue Jackets

January 6

As well as the Blue Jackets have been playing of late... four wins in their last five starts... it's disappointing that they meet the defending Stanley Cup champs here in Detroit tonight with a somewhat depleted lineup. At our near full strength... this would be somewhat of a barometer as to just how far the Jackets have come!!

Seven Regulars are out of the CBJ lineup tonight... joining the growing list are Kristian Huselius and Jiri Novotny. But Coach Hitchcock in addressing the media following the morning skate... simply stated that he had not received any letters of condolences from other teams as of this morning.

Talking to Wings head coach Mike Babcock after the Detroit skate here at Joe Louis Arena, the bench boss told me that the teams first meeting he thought with the exception of the last few minutes the Jackets played a hard fought game and their coaching staff had the scoring chances a close 14-12 in the Red Wings favor. Despite the growing Blue Jackets injury list Babcock added that they still had a couple of "Aces" in Nash and Mason... and expected a tough game tonight!
