Grand Opening of Columbus Blue Jackets Family Resource Center at Columbus Children's Hospital

What: Grand Opening of the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation Family Resource Center, named in honor of the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation commitment of $1.5 million to Columbus Children's Hospital.

 

When:Monday, Feb. 12 4 p.m. - Media tour of the Center with Blue Jackets representatives and Hats For Heroes kids 4:30 p.m. - Blue Ribbon Cutting ceremony

Valet parking will be available beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the C Lobby entrance at the corner of Ann St. and Children's Drive.

Notes: The 5000 square-feet Center is decorated in a Blue Jackets hockey theme and is open to all families with patients receiving care at Children's. The Center offers a lounge, kitchen, laundry, classrooms, exercise and breastfeeding facilities; healthcare reference materials; and internet access so that families can tend to their personal needs within the hospital setting. The Center is located adjacent to the hospital cafeteria and near the gift shop and chapel, making access to these facilities convenient for families.

 

Family Resource Center

The Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation Family Resource Center, located along the primary public concourse in Children’s Hospital's new Clinical Expansion Facility, is a place of respite and comfort for patients’ families. The Center provides a variety of services and amenities to ease the stress that naturally accompanies any hospital stay. The space was designed to replicate the colors and overall atmosphere of Nationwide Arena, home to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Following are the highlights for each component of the Center together with the Blue Jackets branding elements incorporated into each space.

Entrance, Foyer and Receptionist desk.

-The entrance to the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation Family Resource Center is easy to find with the Blue Jackets Foundation logo etched in the main glass window. Its location immediately adjacent to the main hospital cafeteria and close to the gift shop and chapel allows families to quickly access all major public areas of the building. Upon entering the space, guests will find a medallion on the floor matching those found on the concourse at Nationwide Arena indicating the distance to Center Ice. This special medallion showcases the 13,200 feet from the space to Center Ice at Nationwide.

-For families wanting a change from cafeteria fare, a dedicated Donatos hotline phone is mounted near the receptionist desk for direct dial to the nearest store. All orders will be delivered to the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation Family Resource Center at a special discounted price.

-The Blue Jackets' community involvement will be showcased through display showcases including team photos and hockey accessories, Hats For Heroes hats & history, Blue Jackets bike helmets, a narrative explaining the mission of the Blue Jackets Foundation.

-Blue Jackets Foundation partner Connell’s Maple Lee Flowers & Gifts will deliver a fresh floral arrangement each week for the reception desk. In addition, families interested in purchasing flowers will have access to a catalog of flower arrangements and receive a 10%

Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation Family Resource discount.

Lounge

-The lounge is a relaxing space for families to unwind and enjoy some of the same comforts of home including television, movies, books, newspapers, magazines, music and an X-Box courtesy of Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Columbus.

-The centerpiece of this space is a 6 ft. by 6 ft. photo mosaic comprised of photos capturing the Blue Jackets both in action on the ice and off the ice in the community. Blue Jackets gear including helmet, gloves, puck and stick are mounted alongside the photo mosaic.

-Families can tune into FSN Ohio for special viewing parties to watch all televised Columbus Blue Jackets games.

-A special area for kids features a custom designed mini-Zamboni® toy box and a hockey stick table with matching chairs.

Kitchen

-The kitchen provides families with a cafr atmosphere to enjoy a homemade meal–or their Donatos pizza.

-Pepsi-Cola products are featured in a custom-designed Blue Jackets vending machine.

-Tim Horton's has provided a coffee brewer and unlimited Tim Horton's coffee for the families to enjoy. Periodically family "coffee talks" will be hosted to give families an opportunity to get together and share experiences. Tim Horton's will deliver Tim Bits, bagels and other product for these special sessions.

Library/Resource Center

-Computers, internet and wireless access allows families to stay connected to loved ones as well as employers. All computers feature a Blue Jackets screen saver when not is use.

-On-line resources, periodicals and other written materials help parents research and learn more about their child’s specific condition. A librarian will be available to assist families.

Exercise Center/Laundry/Shower

-An exercise center, complete with Blue Jackets replica locker tags, will be available for use by our families to assist in their physical well being as well as provide for stress relief.

-Laundry and shower facilities will be available for families of children with extended stays.

Classrooms

-Current Blue Jackets sponsored programs will take place in this space including bike helmet distribution and Sibling Support classes.

-Families going home with their child will take a class to learn how to use the equipment needed to properly care for their child.

-Community education classes may also be offered in this space.

-This room is highlighted by framed black and white images showcasing the Blue Jackets player visits to Columbus Children’s throughout the years.

Other Special Features

-The Columbus Dispatch will deliver two daily papers to the space.

-A donor wall is housed to the right of the reception desk to prominently feature the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation partners who have joined the Foundation in providing a dedicated space for the families.
