FIRST PERIOD RECAP:
It has taken both teams a while to get going and neither side really dominated the opening period, and thus, we're scoreless after 20 minutes at Nationwide Arena. Yes, the Penguins have 15 shots to only seven for the Blue Jackets, but Columbus had the better quality chances - including a close call for former Penguin forward Brian Gibbons at the side of the net. His line with Dubinsky at center and Josh Anderson has been the most noticeable in the game so far, finishing checks and creating chances off the forecheck. At the other end, it was a busy period for Sergei Bobrovsky but he stopped 'em all inluding a couple that were good looks.

SCOUTING REPORT

This has been a summer of transition for the Penguins, one that began after being eliminated by the New York Rangers in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The early exit led to the dismissal of first GM Ray Shero and then, once Jim Rutherford was hired, the firing of coach Dan Bylsma. Rutherford reportedly interviewed several candidates for the vacant Penguins coach job before settling on Mike Johnston, a former NHL assistant who had built and run the Portland Winterhawks, one of junior hockey’s most successful clubs.

Johnston likes the game fast and likes his players to have the freedom to make plays, and on a team with some of the game’s most electric players, one would think he’s a good fit in Pittsburgh. While this is only the preseason and there are several interchangeable parts, it will be worth watching to see the changes in Pittsburgh’s style of play as we get closer to the regular season.

For Tuesday’s game, the Blue Jackets are bringing a lineup full of veterans including goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who makes his first start of the preseason and is expected to play two periods.

Scott Hartnell, acquired this summer in a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers, is scheduled to make his unofficial Blue Jackets debut in front of the home crowd at Nationwide Arena.
