GAME BLOG: Blue Jackets vs. Stars

by Rob Mixer / Columbus Blue Jackets

7:45 P.M. -- FIRST PERIOD ANALYSIS: A disjointed first period has come to a close at Nationwide Arena. The Blue Jackets and Stars are scoreless through 20 minutes and neither side really got anything going. Columbus was gifted a trio of power play chances thanks to some careless Stars penalties, but the power play was sluggish. The zone time was inconsistent and Kari Lehtonen only saw one shot during three power plays. The Blue Jackets' three shots on goal consisted of two wrist shots from the point and another from the boards, and that's not going to get it done. First adjustment: more speed in the offensive zone. There doesn't seem to be a lot of energy going with the cycle and it's taking away from any presence the Blue Jackets have in the attacking end.

11:30 A.M. -- Richards confirmed that Colton Gillies will make his season debut tonight against Dallas. He praised Gillies for being "a professional" throughout the first five games and for how hard he worked during practice leading up to his first crack at the lineup. Gillies will play alongside Mark Letestu and Jared Boll tonight.

10:00 A.M. -- The Blue Jackets are on the ice for today's morning skate at Nationwide Arena. Everyone (minus Cam Atkinson, of course) is present and accounted for. Sergei Bobrovsky is working in the usual starter's net today, so that may be a sign he starts tonight vs.  Dallas. We'll wait to get official word from Todd Richards after practice.

9:30 A.M. -- Good morning and happy game day, everyone. I'm here inside a warm and cozy Nationwide Arena (at least it'll be warm until I go down to the ice) and ready to rock with the latest game day blog.

The Dallas Stars are in town tonight to face the Blue Jackets, and they've got a mixed bag of results in the early stages of the season. Dallas is 2-2-1 in its first five games and has lost two straight, and tonight marks the start of a back-to-back set on the road. The Stars hit the road (in an airplane, but you catch my drift) to Detroit immediately after tonight's game and will take on the Red Wings on Tuesday at The Joe.

This should be an entertaining game. I've had the chance to watch the Stars play a few games this year and they can skate, move the puck, and there's a ton of skill at forward. That Kari Lehtonen guy isn't bad between the pipes, either; he's only 5-3-1 with a career 1.78 GAA and .940 save percentage. Here's hoping the Blue Jackets can put a dent in that stellar track record tonight.

While we're waiting for the morning skate, how about taking a look at this year's awesome opening video? It's a revolution, I suppose.
