Post-Game Notes

Detroit Red Wings (6) at Columbus Blue Jackets (5) –

Detroit wins the series 4-0

Stanley Cup Playoffs – Western Conference Quarterfinals – Game Four
April 23, 2009 – Nationwide Arena (18,889)

Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock

Commenting on tonight's game…

"I thought the second period was more of a free-for-all than the third. I was really proud of the players today; they gave everything they had today. I was really proud of the fans. The fans were great, even when we were down 3-1 or 5-3, they weren't leaving us. The fans, when we were down 5-3, brought us back as much as the players brought us back. I saw significant impact of people in the building; how they can impact the team's fortunes. We got some energy because of (the fans)."

Commenting on the Blue Jackets penalty in the third period…
"By the rule book it's probably the right call. By the circumstances of the game, I didn't like the call."

Commenting on the series…
"Our team played a different game the last two (games), was more effective. For anywhere between 35-40 minutes, we were there with them. That tells you the difference between the two hockey clubs. They just have a lot of guys that can do the job and really well. I just don't like to lose at home, that's disappointing. You don’t want to get outted at home."

Commenting on the Peca-Torres-Dorsett line…
"In Games Three and Four, we got real good energy from Peca's line. They really helped us. That line found a niche in the series and did a good job; they provided us with the energy."

Commenting on the lessons learned…
"We got in the playoffs because we competed, not because we are the most skilled team. We played the right way and we were successful because of it. The players bought in. Our struggle to get in, the intensity, and the maxing out, I thought hurt us in the playoffs. We knew we needed 90-plus to get in and we knew how tough our schedule was and we had to max out to get in (the playoffs)."

"Each year is different and each year is new. We will be better on paper because our young guys are a year better. We're going to start over again, like a lot of teams. We have a lot of pieces in place that can grow and prosper in this league."

Commenting on Detroit…
"They play the game the right way. For a skill team, they get their noses dirty. They were going for the throat today. When you are a championship team, you got to close. Once we settled down in the first period, we got up to the level. They're not resting on their laurels. They're not just good players; they are good players that are well coached. They are going to have their troubles. If it isn't one line, it's another. That's what happens when you are a deep hockey club and you are competing."

Commenting on goaltender Steve Mason
"I don't think our goaltender had the energy. That's nothing against him, but when you play 25-straight games to help the team get in. He, like a lot of players, didn't have the energy at the start of the playoffs."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes

Blue Jackets Left Wing Jason Chimera

Commenting on the Blue Jackets penalty in the third period…

"It's a tough call. It's his discretion, so we'll leave it at that. It looked like we had five guys on the ice, but it was his call to make. He felt we had six guys on the ice so that's (the call) he made."

Commenting on battling back from two goals down twice…
"We played hard. We were down two goals, down two goals again, came back both times. We battled back all night. I thought we carried the momentum in the third period, too. We had some chances in the third. We were looking good and I thought we were going to get the win, but that's the way it goes."

Blue Jackets Center R.J. Umberger

Commenting on this season…

"I am completely proud. It's been a fight all year. We overcame a lot, we achieved a lot, the history we made. Right now it's still too fresh. You hate to lose. It hurts too bad, no matter how it happens. Tomorrow we'll reflect on our season. I think we made big strides this year, and it's definitely exciting for next season."

Commenting on the high scoring game…
"It's the playoffs. You never know what's going to happen. Sometimes that's the way it goes. You'll see a 1-0 win, and the next game is 6-5. That's just the way it is in the playoffs."

Blue Jackets Left Wing Rick Nash

Commenting on tonight's game…

"We were great. Our fans were great. I thought that was our best go, by far (of the series). We proved to ourselves, we proved to the whole city, that we can keep up with them."

Commenting on the loss…
"It's a tough way to lose. What can you say? There's 19,000 people. Everyone saw what happened and I don't need to comment on it."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"It was do-or-die. You can't get down on yourself; you can't get negative. It's not going to help anything. We stayed positive all game, and we finally started scoring on our opportunities. We knew that once we got to (Chris) Osgood that we could get a bunch (of goals) and that's what happened."

Detroit Red Wings Coach Mike Babcock

Commenting on tonight's game…

"I can't remember when we've played like that, quite honestly. We had the game in a good situation twice and you have to give them a lot of credit, they showed a ton of heart tonight. Their fans were fantastic. I thought they really tried to push the whole game. There was so much emotion in the game tonight, it just goes to show how much seasoning we have as a group. How much we've won, but no matter how much seasoning you have, sometimes you aren't as emotionally under control and you do things you probably shouldn't."

Commenting on closing out the series tonight…
"Well sometimes if you knew you weren't going to get hurt in Game Five, it might be better to play one more. The more games you play the better chance you have to get hurt. Being healthy is what I call getting lucky at playoff time."

Commenting on emotion of tonight's game…
"If I were them I would be proud of my effort tonight. They played hard. They played with conviction and courage. They let it all hang out. We got caught up in that emotional roller coaster tonight, which like I said earlier, if you don't… we win easy."

Detroit Red Wings Player Quotes

Detroit Red Wings Left Wing Tomas Holmstrom

Commenting on tonight's game…

"You have to give them credit, down two goals and coming back. They got the penalty for too many men on the ice and we scored. They were coming and they had many great chances. It was a battle from the start for sure."

Detroit Red Wings Right Wing Marian Hossa

Commenting on tonight's game…

"I think we were running around too much and had too many turnovers in the neutral zone and they have good players. They started to play well defensively and they scored two goals to tie the game they are a good team and they showed good character. They battled hard and didn't make it easy on us. We found a way to win at the end."

Commenting on his two goals…
"The first was big goal, it gave us the lead and the second was a little bigger because it put us up by two goals, but they played hard and came back to tie it. We were fortunate to get that one at the end for the win."

Detroit Red Wings Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom

Commenting on the Blue Jackets play…

"I give them a lot of credit for battling throughout the whole 60 minutes."

Commenting on the second and third period intermission talks…
"We have to keep our composure, we've got to come out and play the way the way - we play with confidence to win this game."
