After a long day (but a fun day) yesterday, today has been a lot more relaxing here in Ottawa. You can really feel the excitement at the All-Star weekend building, and we’re just about 24 hours away from the Skills competition over in Kanata!
There was a lot going on yesterday with two flights, a hotel check-in, the fantasy player draft and making sure my mom and friends all arrived safely. Thankfully everyone is here and accounted for (my friend Jamie got here last night after the draft because he was flying in from Vancouver) and you should see their faces as they walk around town! Mom’s really excited and has been enjoying the experience and my friends are having a great time, too.
So basically, today has been mostly filled with hanging out at the hotel and around Ottawa. There’s so much to see and do that I don’t think we’ll have time to check everything off the list, but we’re certainly going to try. The coolest thing, by far, is seeing all the people skating on the Rideau Canal – it’s a river that runs right through the heart of the city and with it being so cold up here, the canal has frozen over and it’s a popular place to go skating. A lot of the major TV networks have their broadcast stations set up on the canal, with Rogers Sportsnet, TSN and others ready to cover the Skills and All-Star Game in the next couple of days.
Best part about today has easily been the laid-back aspect. It’s been a good chance for my group to wander around soak in the atmosphere. Just before dinner, I took part in the All-Star weekend media availability at the Westin Hotel and the first thing I noticed was all the media members here from all over the world! That lasted about an hour, then we went to get something to eat and since then it’s been a lot of TV-watching and putting today’s blog together!
Thanks again for reading today’s blog and check back to BlueJackets.com after the Skills competition tomorrow – I’ll be in the breakaway contest for Team Chara!
