Down on the Farm: Hartigan Tabbed AHL Player of the Week

HARTIGAN NAMED AHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: The American Hockey League announced today that Syracuse Crunch center Mark Hartigan has been named the CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 19, 2006. In four contests last week, Hartigan scored four goals and added five assists for nine points as the Crunch extended their winning streak to seven games.

Hartigan began the week by scoring once and dishing out four assists as Syracuse earned a 9-4 win over Binghamton in Utica, N.Y. The goal was Hartigan’s fourth consecutive game-winner. On Friday in Toronto, he scored a power-play goal to help the Crunch to a 3-2 shootout victory over the Marlies. Back home the next night, Hartigan recorded a goal and an assist in the third period as Syracuse beat Cleveland, 3-1, and Sunday, his goal 11 seconds into the second period put the Crunch up for good en route to a 5-2 win at Binghamton.

In recognition of his achievement, Hartigan will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Crunch home game.

Currently riding a seven-game goal-scoring streak, Hartigan has recorded 28 goals and 37 assists for 65 points in just 42 games this season, good for fourth in the AHL scoring race. He also has one goal in 14 NHL games with Columbus in 2005-06. A native of Fort St. John, B.C., and a 2006 AHL All-Star, Hartigan now has 216 points (97g, 119a) to his credit in 235 career AHL games with Syracuse and Chicago.

CRUNCH MATCH LONGEST WINNING STREAK: With Syracuse’s 5-2 win on Sunday, Feb. 19 @ Binghamton the Crunch tied the franchise mark for consecutive wins (7) set Jan. 26 – Feb. 8, 2000.

HARTIGAN’S HOT STREAK: Center Mark Hartigan appeared in four games with Syracuse last week, recording nine points (4g, 5a). On Sunday, he extended his goal streak to seven games (7g), tying the franchise record for most consecutive games with a goal, set Oct. 28 – Nov. 11, 1994 (Alek Stojanov). He also holds the franchise mark for longest assist streak of 12 games, set Dec. 18, 2005 – Jan. 28, 2006 and has two hat tricks on the season. Hartigan continues to climb the Crunch’s all-time leaders list, moving into first place with 17 game-winning goals. He is third with 170 points all-time, tied with Reggie Save for third 82 goals, fourth with 32 power play goals and sixth with 88 assists. Hartigan also set a new franchise record with nine game-winning goals this season. Through 42 games this season, Hartigan has a team high 65 points (28g, 37a) and has tallied a point in 25 of his last 26 games. In 14 games with Columbus this season, Hartigan has recorded 1 goal and 12 penalty minutes. A native of Fort St. John, British Columbia, Hartigan was re-signed as a free agent by Columbus Aug. 22, 2005.

DELMORE SETS RECORD: Defenseman Andy Delmore continued his solid play on Wednesday at Binghamton (in Utica), tying a franchise record with four goals (Steve Kariya - Feb. 18, 2000 vs. Albany and Mark Hartigan - Jan. 3, 2004 vs. Albany) and setting a franchise record three power play goals in a game. Three of Delmore’s four goals came in a time span of 1:38. The five points on Wednesday by each Delmore, center Peter Sarno and center Mark Hartigan set a new season high for points in a game as well.

SIMON GETS IN ON ACTION: Center Ben Simon put his mark on the Crunch record book Sunday @ Binghamton, tallying his fourth short-handed goal of the season, tying Jarkko Ruutu (1999-2000) and Matt Davidson (2002-03).

Syracuse hosts Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Wednesday, Feb. 22 for the sixth of eight regular season games. The Penguins lead the series 4-1-0 after beating Syracuse 7-2 at Casey Plaza on Jan.18. Center Matt Hussey (4g, 5a) leads all players in head-to-head scoring with nine points. Crunch center Geoff Platt (1g, 3a) leads the Crunch in head-to-head scoring with four points. Goaltenders Martin Prusek (0-2-0) and Andrew Penner (1-1-0) have split time in net. Penguins goaltender Dany Sabourin has a 2-0-0 record. Lifetime, the Crunch are 30-22-7 against the Penguins.

HAMILTON (MONTREAL CANADIENS/EDMONTON OILERS): On Friday, Feb. 24 Syracuse hosts Hamilton for the sixth of eight regular season games against the Bulldogs. Syracuse leads the series 3-1-1 after Syracuse defeated Hamilton 4-1 on Jan. 13 at Copps Coliseum. Center Mark Hartigan (6g, 2a) leads all players in head-to-head scoring with eight points. Center Maxim Lapierre (1g, 4a) leads all Bulldogs players in head-to-head scoring. Goaltender Andrew Penner has a 1-1-1 record for Syracuse. Hamilton goaltender Yann Danis has a 0-2-0 record against Syracuse. Lifetime, the Crunch are 27-30-12 against the Bulldogs.

GRAND RAPIDS (DETROIT RED WINGS): North Division leading Grand Rapids travels to Syracuse on Saturday, Feb. 25 for the fifth of six regular season games. The Griffins lead the series 4-0-0 after defeating Syracuse 7-1 on Feb. 4 at Van Andel Arena. Left wing Jiri Hudler (8a) leads all players in head-to-head scoring with eight points. Defensemen Aaron Johnson (4a) and Andy Delmore (4a) lead the Crunch in head-to-head scoring with four points. Goaltender Martin Prusek (0-1-0) and Andrew Penner (0-1-0) have each appeared in one game for Syracuse. Grand Rapids goaltender Jimmy Howard has recorded two wins for the Griffins. Lifetime, the Crunch are 1-7-0 against the Griffins.

ALBANY (NEW JERSEY DEVILS): Syracuse travels to Albany on Sunday, Feb. 26 for the fifth of six regular season games against the River Rats. Syracuse leads the series 3-1-0 after defeating Albany 4-2 on Jan. 6 at Pepsi Arena. Right wing Joe Motzko (1g, 3a) leads the all players in head-to-head scoring with four points. Right wing Barry Tallackson (2g, 1a) leads the River Rats in head-to-head scoring with three points. Goaltender Martin Prusek has a 2-0-0 record for Syracuse. Albany goaltender Frank Doyle has a 1-2-0 record against Syracuse. Lifetime, the Crunch are 41-36-9 against the River Rats.

CRUNCHABLES: Until the Crunch’s game on Sunday, the last time Syracuse allowed a short-handed goal was Dec. 27 @ Hamilton… Syracuse tied the franchise mark for most road victories in a season, 18, with their win @ Binghamton on Sunday… Syracuse’s nine goals on Wednesday is a season high… Syracuse’s shootout win on Friday against Toronto improved their shootout record to 4-1 on the season. It was the Crunch’s first shootout appearance since Janu. 7 @ Springfield, when the Crunch defeated the Falcons 5-4.
