Disappointment at Nationwide

by Bill Davidge / Columbus Blue Jackets

February 3

First of all fans of CBJ Hockey, thank you for coming out. It was great to sit in the radio booth tonight and see our 121st sellout as a franchise. Writing this blog Sunday morning,(a protocol for coaches is to wait 12 hours and then evaluate), but the purpose to spit it out now is to express the lows and the mid-highs that exist in the sub cranial at this time.

There is not much to say in a game like the 4-1 loss to Minnesota. A couple of mistakes that came back to haunt - really stood tall tonight in the loss. Disappointing to the 18,529 that invaded $1 Sugardale Hot Dog night… disappointing to the players who really wanted to put on a better showing for themselves as well as the "7th" man on the ice (crowd)… and disappointing to the minor blurp in moving on to a longer season now. It will have to wait.

Not competing, checking "back" to the get the puck and stopping Minnesota's best players on the ice like Gaborik and Demitra were not in the cards. In fact, in the three minute span, it was pond hockey with no checking or raising the puck allowed.

The road trip that set the CBJ ahead of the pack is now history and leaves them struggling to make the run now to the Promised Land. It is not time to panic but as Hitch puts it in perspective, the temperature is rising.

The way this team needs to do it is with a total team effort. One player, one trade, one of everything involved in sports greatest game is all about equalizing the highs and the lows of the game. The best players must step up and produce. There are plenty of mirrors around to look at to do some self searching.

Congrats to Derick Brassard on is first NHL goal. He played 12:22 and was 56% on his draws tonight. Can you say welcome to the NHL?

The best player on the ice for the CBJ was Jared Boll. He had 11:01 of ice, two hits, a couple of shots and the intensity and the drive every shift. He is without a lot of argument earning an opportunity to gain more ice time.

Where do the CBJ go now?

Don't panic… the heat is on to perform and the want to win is apparent, but with three days before Ovechkin and the Capitals invade NWA, rest the troops and evaluate the prognosis of Fedorov and Modin… try to squeeze some more output from the best players on the ice… and get back to having the defensive side of the game take precedent. Checking and winning the battles below the offensive hash marks will be in the practice plan of the staff.

It is great to be in the position the team is at this time of the year. For the first time in franchise history, the CBJ are playing for a piece of the pie.

It is an "All you can eat Night" - tickets are available… can you drop a brat off at the booth?
