Detroit @ Dallas... Game Over... Series Over

by Bill Davidge / Columbus Blue Jackets

May 19

With 13 minutes to go in the second period, it appears the Wings are on their way to the Finals against Pittsburgh, as they lead Dallas 4-0. The Wings came in to the game with Chris Chelios out of the lineup and an attitude of winning one-on-one battles, cross ice passes that were "seeing eye" and especially puck control in each zone. They appear to be so dominate when they want… and tonight the want is there.

Their puck protection skill in the offensive zone is ever apparent when their confidence is high. They have the defense pinching with support from the weak side and then move the puck cross ice quickly to make the Stars tire that much more in the chase game. The puck has always moved quicker than the man, and it is so obvious tonight. The transition game is done with puck control with short passes then a destined cross ice bomb. I love to watch their skill game when it is on like we see in this one.

The Wings are ever so dangerous in all situations. Face-offs - they are #1 in the league. Killing penalties effectively is a key with pressure, use of sticks to take away the passing lanes and the anticipation to make transition… ask Zetterberg as he scored his 11th goal of the playoffs and his 21st point, a shorthanded goal at that. Datsyuk scored his ninth and all of his goals have come on the road… how good is this guy?... how about the best in the league, an argument that could be debated with joy!... and oh yes the PP… spread and thread!!!

Do you not give Mike Babcock a little credit? He has done a remarkable job of coaching and is not given the accolades he deserves. He finds a way to get the most out of the team each year, no matter who is in or out of the lineup! The sad thing is we see these guys eight times a year and respect what they do and how explosive they can be when they put it all together… and Babcock is the ring leader.

Well I will watch the third period with no desire to return to this blog… as the title says… GAME OVER and Series over… on to the Cup!

OK... I cheated… a 4-1 final.

Stay tuned!
