Columbus Goaltender Steve Mason Among 10 Finalists for First NHL Award to be Voted on by Fans

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Columbus Blue Jackets rookie goaltender Steve Mason is among 10 finalists for the first-ever fan-driven NHL Award for the player who was voted the best overall regular season performer, the National Hockey League (NHL), the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) and Scotiabank announced April 14.

The 10 finalists for the Scotiabank/NHL FAN FAV™ Award include: Mason, Calgary Flames' forward Jarome Iginla and goaltender Mikka Kiprusoff, Carolina Hurricanes' center Eric Staal, New Jersey Devils' goaltender Martin Brodeur, Pittsburgh Penguins' center Sidney Crosby, San Jose Sharks’ goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, Vancouver Canucks' goaltender Roberto Luongo and Washington Capitals' defenseman Mike Green and forward Alex Ovechkin.

The Scotiabank/NHL FAN FAV Award will be presented at the 2009 NHL Awards which will broadcast live from the Pearl Concert Theater inside the Palms Hotel Las Vegas on June 18, 2009. Airing on CBC in Canada and VERSUS in the United States, the 2009 NHL Awards will bring together the League's best players, celebrities and other NHL VIPs in celebration of the season's brightest stars.

Throughout the season, NHL fans had the opportunity to vote for the player who demonstrated the best skills and strongest overall performance during that week. All of the weekly Scotiabank/NHL FAN FAV Award nominees from the regular season were evaluated by a panel of NHL experts to narrow the list.

The voting to select the overall Scotiabank/NHL FAN FAV Award winner is back in the hands of the fans. Fans can vote on NHL.com at http://www.fanfav-nhl.com through April 24. When the Stanley Cup™ Playoffs are over, the votes will be announced and one lucky Canadian fan will win a trip for two to the 2009 NHL Awards™ in Las Vegas where the winner will make hockey history by presenting the Scotiabank/NHL FAN FAV Award at the 2009 NHL Awards show. The Blue Jackets return to action Thursday when they face the Detroit Red Wings in Game One of a Western Conference Quarterfinals series. Face-off at Joe Louis Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET. Live coverage on FOX Sports Ohio HD will begin with the Blue Jackets Live pre-game show starting at 6:30 p.m. The game also will be broadcast live on the Wheeling Island Hotel Casino Blue Jackets Radio Network and flagship stations WBNS-AM/Sports Radio 1460 The Fan and WWCD-FM/CD101 with coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m.
