Columbus Blue Jackets Sign Forward Matt Calvert to Entry Level Contract

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed left wing Matt Calvert to a standard three-year entry level contract, General Manager Scott Howson announced today. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.

Calvert, 20, was the Blue Jackets' fifth pick, 127th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He is in his third season with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League and has collected 47 goals and 52 assists for 99 points, 70 penalty minutes and a +47 plus/minus rating in 68 games. He leads the WHL in shorthanded goals (nine), while ranking second in game-winning goals (10-tied) and plus/minus rating, is tied for third in goals and fourth in points. He was selected to the WHL Eastern Conference Second All-Star Team on Wednesday.

"Matt has followed up the strong training camp he had with us with a tremendous season in Brandon," Howson said. "We are very happy to get this deal completed. Now he can concentrate on having a solid playoff and Memorial Cup with the Wheat Kings."

The Brandon, Manitoba native has registered 99-131-230, 181 penalty minutes and has a cumulative plus/minus rating of +83 in 198 career games with Brandon. He has added 10-10-20, 24 penalty minutes and is +13 in 18 career playoff games.

The Blue Jackets return to action Friday when they host the Minnesota Wild. Game time from Nationwide Arena is 7 p.m. ET.
