Columbus Blue Jackets’ Second Team Mascot, "Boomer," to Make Debut at Nationwide Arena Tonight

by Blue Jackets Staff / Columbus Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS, OHIO – During the Columbus Blue Jackets' Third Jersey unveiling event at The Mall at Tuttle Crossing on Wednesday evening, fans were introduced to a second team mascot that will join Stinger exclusively for home games in which the team wears the new Third Jersey. "Boomer," a kid-friendly, cushy cannon character with a friendly face and fluffy moustache reminiscent of a Civil War-era general, makes his debut at Nationwide Arena tonight when the Blue Jackets host the Detroit Red Wings.

The Blue Jackets invited the students of Arlington Park Elementary School, the club's Communities in Schools partner, to submit names for the new mascot. After reviewing 200 entries, it was the suggestion of five-year old kindergarten student Tra'von Ray that was deemed the winner. Tra’von and his family will be guests at an upcoming game where he will be presented with a new Third Jersey.

During Third Jersey Nights, Boomer can be found on the concourse mingling with fans, posing for photos and signing autographs. He will also be showcased in a variety of game entertainment activities including pre-game where he'll join the Dewmolisher on the ice to fire t-shirts into the crowd and at intermission where he will assist the Pepsi Power Patrol or Stinger with various promotions.

Following his debut tonight, Boomer is scheduled to appear during the following Third Jersey Nights at Nationwide Arena: Saturday, Dec. 4 vs. Pittsburgh; Saturday, Dec. 11 vs. NY Rangers; Saturday, Dec. 18 vs. Dallas; Monday, Dec. 27 vs. Minnesota; Friday, Dec. 31 vs. Ottawa; Friday, Jan. 14 vs. Detroit; Saturday, Feb. 5 vs. Edmonton; Thursday, Mar. 17 vs. Detroit; Sunday, Mar. 20 vs. New Jersey; Friday, Apr. 1 vs. Chicago; and Saturday, Apr. 9 vs. Buffalo.

After tonight's game, the Blue Jackets return to action Sunday when they visit the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. Game time is set for 5 p.m. ET. Live coverage on FOX Sports Ohio HD begins with the Blue Jackets Live pre-game show starting at 4:30 p.m. The game will also be broadcast live on the Wheeling Island Hotel & Casino Blue Jackets Radio Network, including 97.1 The Fan and online at BlueJackets.com.
