COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed left wing Alexandre Picard to a one-year contract, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.
Picard, 23, collected one assist and 26 penalty minutes in 15 games with Columbus in 2008-09 and also registered 22-10-32 and 107 penalty minutes in 49 games with the Syracuse Crunch, the club’s American Hockey League affiliate. He tied for the team lead in goals, was second in power play goals (7) and tied for fourth in points. He became the only player in Crunch history to record back-to-back hat tricks when he scored three goals Mar. 20 vs. Rochester and four goals Mar. 21 vs. Albany. He finished the season scoring goals in 14 of the team’s final 22 games (20 goals).
Columbus’ first pick, eighth overall, in the 2004 Entry Draft, he has tallied 0-2-2 and 48 penalty minutes in 58 career games with Columbus, while adding 55-56-111, 348 penalty minutes and a cumulative plus/minus rating of +6 in 192 career AHL games.
The Les Saules, Quebec native notched 93-104-197, 289 penalty minutes and a cumulative plus/minus rating of +28 in 206 career games with Sherbrooke and Lewiston of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2001-05. He had back-to-back 80-plus point seasons in 2003-04 and 2004-05 and was selected to play in the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in 2003-04 and for Team QMJHL in the Canada/Russia Challenge in 2003-04 and 2004-05.
The Blue Jackets open the 2009-10 regular season on Saturday, October 3, against the Minnesota Wild. Game time from Nationwide Arena is 7 p.m. Live coverage on FOX Sports Ohio will begin with the Blue Jackets Live pre-game show starting at 6:30 p.m. The game will also broadcast live on the Blue Jackets Radio Network and flagship station WWCD-FM, CD101.
