COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets join the National Hockey League in support of Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Month by hosting the club’s annual Hockey Fights Cancer Night in partnership with OhioHealth on Tuesday, October 25 when the Jackets host the Detroit Red Wings. During the game, several pediatric cancer heroes will be honored by participating in a variety of in-game experiences and behind-the-scenes opportunities including the pre-game puck drop and intermission rides on the Zamboni®. In addition, this night will also celebrate the work of cancer care providers as several OhioHealth patient navigators receive special in-game recognition along with their patients and families.
In keeping with the NHL’s message that the color purple represents awareness for all types of cancer, the Blue Jackets Foundation will host several themed fundraisers to benefit its Hats For Heroes program and the fight against pediatric cancer.
- Purple Jersey Auction (Oct. 18 & 25): Players will wear purple jerseys during pre-game warm-ups on Tuesday, Oct. 25. The complete set of authentic worn jerseys will be individually autographed by the respective players and available for bidding in the silent auction set up on the arena’s Bud Light Terrace beginning with tonight’s game. All jerseys will have a starting bid of $150 with bids being accepted through the end of the second intermission of the Oct. 25 game.
- Purple Goalie Equipment Auction: Goaltender Steve Mason will show his support for the cause by wearing purple pads, glove and blocker on Hockey Fights Cancer Night. Following the game, Mason will sign the custom Vaughn goalie gear and the set of pads, glove and blocker will be individually available via online auction on BlueJacketsFoundation.org from Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. through Tuesday, Nov. 1 at noon.
- Purple Hockey Fights Cancer T-shirt Sale: Hockey Fights Cancer t-shirts are $15 and available for purchase at the Foundation kiosk. Supplies are limited.
The night also marks the first opportunity for fans to purchase the 2011-12 edition Hats For Heroes hats, which will be available at all FOX Sports Ohio Blue Line locations in the arena on this night only. Thanks to donations by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #9 and Halo Branded Solutions, 100% of the hat sales will directly benefit Hats For Heroes.
To round out Hockey Fights Cancer Night festivities, OhioHealth invites all fans to visit their photo booth near section 119 to pick up a commemorative photo keepsake. In addition, 500 co-branded Blue Jackets/OhioHealth scarves will be randomly awarded during the game and four random fans will win tickets to an upcoming game.
The fight against pediatric cancer remains the Blue Jackets Foundation's signature focus for much of its fundraising, programming, and grant-making efforts. Highlighted by the Hats For Heroes program, more than $1 million has been raised since 2000. Dollars raised currently fund a variety of support programs for pediatric cancer patients and their families, critical research projects and assistance in providing palliative care to young victims.
