CBJ@NJD: Voracek's slick hands wins it in shootout

NEWARK, N.J. -- Joonas Korpisalo made 36 saves, including 14 in the third period, and the Columbus Blue Jackets rallied for a 4-3 shootout win against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Sunday.

Boone Jenner tied the game at 14:35 of the third period, and Jakub Voracek scored the only goal of the shootout in the third round for the Blue Jackets (5-3-0), who won on the road for the first time this season (1-2-0). Patrik Laine had a goal and an assist.
"It was a gutsy win," Columbus coach Brad Larsen said. "It was nothing pretty, that's for sure, but there are no pretty points out there."
Korpisalo made saves against Jesper Bratt, Dougie Hamilton and Dawson Mercer in the shootout to earn his first win of the season (1-2-0).
"I didn't (have a book on the shooters)," Korpisalo said. "I just go with the instincts. Obviously you want to win, but I didn't think too much. Just go out there and play and do my best."
Mercer and Hamilton scored 1:17 apart in the second period, and P.K. Subban had two assists for the Devils (4-2-1), who went 0-for-3 on the power play. Scott Wedgewood made 23 saves.
"We have all the talent, we have to just execute better," Hamilton said. "We just got to get more comfortable with each other. So, obviously (it's) disappointing we didn't get one in at the end."

CBJ@NJD: Jenner intercepts a dump out, ties it up 3-3

Jenner tied it 3-3 after he stole a pass by Ty Smith with his glove in the high slot and scored from the left face-off circle.
"I was just coming off the bench and kind of saw that play developing," Jenner said. "I saw the puck in the air and tried to bat it down. It kind of went a little bit ahead of me and I tried just to get it on net as quick as I could ... maybe try to trick the goalie, and happy it went by him."
The Blue Jackets denied the Devils on consecutive power plays, including a two-man advantage for 34 seconds with 2:07 remaining in the third period.
"We were fighting it, the game got away from us and we didn't have much going and Boone comes through with a big goal," Larsen said. "Then the penalty kill was massive. Those guys just battled their tails off to get us to overtime. It was obviously a huge moment, and love to see your captain (Jenner) lead the charge."
Andreas Johnsson scored his third goal in two games on a wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle to give the Devils a 1-0 lead at 1:07 of the first period.

Oliver Bjorkstrand tied it 1-1 on a power-play goal off a quick shot from the high slot at 11:55 of the first.
Laine gave the Blue Jackets a 2-1 lead on a one-timer from the left circle at 14:54 of the first period.
Mercer tied it 2-2 on a wraparound at the left post at 8:37 of the second, and Hamilton gave the Devils a 3-2 lead at 9:54 with a slap shot from the right circle.
"You want to be a top team in this league, you have to find ways to win back-to-back when you're up 3-2 in the third," Subban said. "We're still learning those things."
New Jersey, which won 4-2 at the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, outshot Columbus 14-3 in the third period but did not score.
"The guys should feel good," Larsen said. "They found a way to get through this, get a win, and 'Korpi' had a big effort for us tonight."
NOTES: Hamilton led all skaters in shots on goal (10) and ice time (26:35). He blocked four shots and was plus-2. … Bjorkstrand has scored 14 points (nine goals, five assists) in 16 games against the Devils.
