COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets made several moves today to reduce their roster to 23 players heading into this Saturday's season opener vs. the Minnesota Wild, General Manager Scott Howson announced.
The Blue Jackets placed left wing Fredrik Modin on Injured Reserve; placed left wing Alexandre Picard and defenseman Mathieu Roy on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the Syracuse Crunch, the club's American Hockey League affiliate; returned left wing Matt Calvert to the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League; and released defenseman Martin Skoula. In addition, the club announced the signing of defensemen David Liffiton and Dylan Reese to two-way National Hockey League-American Hockey League contracts with both players currently assigned to Syracuse.
Liffiton, who will turn 25 on October 18, was Colorado's first pick, 63rd overall, in the 2003 Entry Draft. He also collected nine penalty minutes in three games with the New York Rangers during that span. The Windsor, Ontario native registered 10-29-39 and 289 penalty minutes in 170 career games with the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League from 2001-04.
Reese, 25, has spent the past two years in the AHL, registering 2-37-39 and 125 penalty minutes in 144 games with San Antonio and Hartford. He notched 1-27-28 and 64 penalty minutes in 75 games with San Antonio in 2008-09. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he collected 21-40-61 and 124 penalty minutes in 121 career games at Harvard University (ECAC) from 2003-07. He was the New York Rangers' ninth pick, 209th overall, in the 2003 Entry Draft. The Jackets open the 2009-10 regular season on Saturday, October 3, against the Wild.
