COLUMBUS, OHIO --- Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has been named the National Hockey League’s Third Star for the month of March, the League and club announced today. Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby was named the NHL’s First Star, while Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban is the Second Star selection.
Bobrovsky compiled a 9-2-3 record with a 1.49 goals-against average, .950 save percentage and three shutouts in 14 games in March, leading Columbus to the most successful month in franchise history (10-2-4, 24 pts.). He allowed 20 goals on 404 shots in 807 minutes played, surrendering one goal or fewer in 10 of his 14 appearances and making 30 or move saves seven times. He made a season-high 39 saves in back-to-back games – a 2-1 SOL vs. Chicago on Mar. 14 and 1-0 SO win vs. Phoenix on Mar. 16. He was the NHL’s First Star for the week ending March 10 (4-0-0, 0.77 GAA, .972 SV%, 1 SO in 4 GP) and the League’s Third Star for the week ending March 17 (1-0-2, 0.62 GAA, .982 SV%, 1 SO in 3 GP).
The 24-year-old native of Novokuznetsk, Russia is 12-8-6 with a 2.13 GAA, .927 SV% and three SO in 26 games this season. He ranks second in the NHL in save percentage, fourth-T in shutouts and fifth-T in goals-against average among goaltenders with 15 or more games played. He is 54-31-16 with a 2.59 GAA, .914 SV% and three SO in 109 career NHL games with the Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers.
Bobrovsky is the first Columbus player recognized as one of the League’s Three Stars of the Month since Rick Nash was the Third Star in March 2009. The former CBJ captain tallied 10-7-17 in 15 games, including an unassisted hat trick vs. the Detroit Red Wings on Mar. 7, 2009.
The Blue Jackets return to action on Thursday when they visit the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena.
