COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets announced today that Paul Kramer of Columbus and Cathy Lord of Jackson, Ohio are the winners of the season ticket holder contest to design the masks that will be worn by club goaltenders Steve Mason and Mathieu Garon during the team's commemorative 10th season.
Upon reviewing the 83 imaginative and inspired entries that were submitted, Steve Mason chose Lord's design which emphasizes the connection between the Blue Jackets team name and its Civil War heritage by featuring a flag-bearing soldier marching atop the mask while stars representing Ohio's state flag adorn the sides. Mathieu Garon selected Kramer's rendering which also invokes the Civil War motif by incorporating a partial image of the Union Army cap as well as the team's primary and 10th season logos.
Both winning selections were turned over to each goalie's personal mask designer to be professionally produced as the closest possible replication of the fan's design. At the end of the 2010-11 campaign, Mason and Garon will autograph the game-worn masks and personally present them to their respective fan designers.
All other entrants received a prize of four tickets to an upcoming preseason game. In addition, all contestants were eligible for a random drawing to win one of the team’s new third jerseys, which will be worn by the team for the first time on Friday, Nov. 26 when the Jackets host the Detroit Red Wings.
Columbus opens its 10th National Hockey League regular season in Stockholm, Sweden on October 8-9 against the San Jose Sharks as part of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere™ and NHL Face-Off™ before returning to Nationwide Arena for the home opener on Friday, Oct. 15 against defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.
