Columbus Blue Jackets Announce Promotions within the Club's Hockey Operations Department

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Columbus Blue Jackets have made several changes to the structure of the club's hockey operations department, General Manager Scott Howson announced today. Don Boyd has been promoted to director of hockey operations and player personnel; Chris MacFarland has been promoted to assistant to the general manager; John Williams has been promoted to assistant director of amateur scouting; and Kjell Larsson has been promoted to professional European scout. In addition, Bryan Stewart has joined the organization as the club's video scout.

Boyd has been a member of the Blue Jackets organization since 1999 and was named director of player personnel in August 2005. In his new role, he will work closely with Scott Howson on all issues related to the club's player personnel including assignments within the organization, the entry draft and free agency. He is responsible for the development and implementation of the club's amateur and professional scouting programs in North America and Europe in conjunction with Director of Amateur Scouting Paul Castron and Director of Pro Scouting Bob Strumm. He will also work with Howson and Head Coach Ken Hitchcock in coordinating the club's annual training, development and rookie camps.

MacFarland was promoted after having served as the club's manager of hockey operations since 2001. He originally joined the Blue Jackets in 1999. He is responsible for assisting the general manager in all facets of the hockey operations department, including salary cap management, contract negotiations and research, salary arbitration, strategic planning, player assignments, application and administration of the NHL and AHL collective bargaining agreements, personnel decisions and professional and amateur scouting.

Williams joined the Blue Jackets as an amateur scout during the summer of 2000 with 15 years of experience in junior hockey. He will assist Paul Castron in the coordination of the club's amateur scouting efforts in North America and Europe.

Larsson has been a member of the Blue Jackets scouting staff since 1999 after spending the previous 25 years coaching in France and Sweden, where he played in integral role in the development of hockey in his native country. He coached Team Sweden at the 1976 Canada Cup and 1984 Olympic Games. He also served as the coach for Team France at the 1988, 1992 and 1994 Olympic Games.

Stewart joins the club after spending the previous two seasons with the Buffalo Sabres. He will be implementing a new video scouting system for the club, manage its video scouting library and provide Scott Howson with video scouting reports throughout the season. He served as a game night video assistant for the Sabres in 2005-06 and was named the club’s video pro scout in 2006-07.
