Columbus Blue Jackets Acquire Defenseman Nathan Paetsch, 2010 2nd Round Pick from Buffalo Sabres for Forward Raffi Torres

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired defenseman Nathan Paetsch and a second round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for forward Raffi Torres, General Manager Scott Howson announced March 3. The second round pick was previously acquired by Buffalo from the Vancouver Canucks. The transaction is pending the completion of player physicals.

Paetsch (pronounced PASH), 26, has registered seven goals and 35 assists for 42 points with 108 penalty minutes and a cumulative +17 plus/minus rating in 157 career NHL games with the Sabres. He has appeared in 11 games this season, tallying 1-1-2, six penalty minutes and is +2. His best campaign was 2006-07 when he collected a career-high 2-22-24, 50 penalty minutes and was +10 in 63 games with the Sabres.

The 6-foot-1, 198-pound native of Humboldt, Saskatchewan was selected by Washington with the 58th overall pick in the 2001 Entry Draft. He re-entered the draft a year later and was Buffalo’s eighth pick, 202nd overall in the 2002 Entry Draft. He spent three seasons with the American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans from 2003-06, registering 20-63-83 and 289 penalty minutes in 206 career AHL games.

He collected 48-164-212 and 334 penalty minutes in 258 games over four seasons with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League, including 15-39-54 and 81 penalty minutes in 59 games to earn Second Team WHL East All-Star honors in 2002-03. He also represented Canada at the World Junior Championships in 2002 and 2003, winning a pair of silver medals.

Torres, who joined the Blue Jackets from Edmonton in exchange for forward Gilbert Brule on July 1, 2008, tallied 31-20-51 and 55 penalty minutes in 111 games with the club, including 19-12-31 and 32 penalty minutes in 60 games this season. He has 98-79-177 and 310 penalty minutes in 418 career games.
