John Moore was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 1st round (21st overall) in 2009.

In 2009-10, Moore played in 61 games for the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL. He scored 10-37-47 with 53 penalty minutes. In 20 playoff games, he recorded 4-12-16.

In 2008-09, Moore played in 57 games for the Chicago Steel of the USHL. He scored 14-25-39 with 50 penalty minutes. He was the USHL Defenseman of the Year and First Team All Star.

In 2007-08, Moore played in 56 games for the Chicago Steel of the USHL. He scored 4-11-15 with 26 penalty minutes. In 7 playoff games, he recorded 0-2-2 with 2 penalty minutes.
