CBJ Prospect Kris Russell Named WHL Defenseman of the Year
Also named Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year

Calgary, AB - The Western Hockey League today announced the 2005-06 Winners of the Annual Year End Awards for the WHL at a Luncheon held in Calgary on Wednesday. Columbus Blue Jacket draft pick (Columbus' third pick, 67th overall) Kris Russell won the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the Defenseman of the Year.

Russell also took home the Brad Hornung Trophy as the WHL's Most Sportsmalike Player of the Year.

Russell finished the WHL regular season posting 14-33-47 with a +8 rating in 55 games, while finishing with just 18 penalty minutes to help lead the team to the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy, awarded to the WHL's Top Team. (47-16-1-8, 103 pts.)

Russell also earned a Gold Medal at the World Junior Championships in January, scoring 1-3-4, with a +6 plus/minus rating, which was second on the team. His four points ranked eighth amongst defenesmen, while his +6 was also tied for eighth in the tournament.
