Columbus Blue Jackets Morning Skate Quotes

Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on the team mentality…
“You don’t have to have the best players to win, you have to have the best team. I think our job is to play as well as we can as a team and see where it ends up at the end of the day. It’s, to me, the reason that a team like Detroit has won so often. They’ve beaten teams with good players before. But they play well as a team and our challenge is to stay tight and cohesive and then to regroup because no series against Detroit is going to be easy or tough. It’s the course of the series where Detroit will break you down and our job is to keep this group together and to continually get better as the series goes on.”

Commenting on the Blue Jackets players who have playoff experience…
“We realize the youth in the franchise and the inexperience of the franchise, but as a group, we’re not inexperienced. I have been around a little while, there’s players who have played in the (Stanley Cup) Final, there’s guys that have won Cups. We had some individuals who spoke at dinner last night and they really understood what it took to win in a playoff series. I think they’re going to keep us grounded and not let us get too high or let us get too low.”

Goaltender Steve Mason
Commenting on playing his first NHL playoff game…
“I am just mainly excited. I don’t think there are any nerves for myself personally, but it’s going to be a lot of fun. I think everybody just wants to get this game going.”

Commenting on playing a crucial position…
“I think that’s part of the reason I enjoy the goaltending position, as there is more pressure on him and it’s much more exciting. I am not going to put any added pressure on myself. It’s a simple game out there and I have to keep doing it.”

Commenting on playing a storied franchise in the Detroit Red Wings…
“We’re well over that. We played them six times this year and I think the nerves were built out over that series. The playoffs are a whole new season and we’re prepared for it. We both have the same record at 0-0 and obviously it’s going to be a fun series.”

Commenting on his composure…
“I am trying not to get too high or too low. Obviously this is going to be a pretty important series for our franchise and we want to come out on the right foot and there’s no better opportunity than to play Detroit.”

Commenting on the buzz in Columbus…
“It’s been great. The fans have been unbelievable. The support we’ve gotten has been second to none. I am sure that our first game at Nationwide is going to be pretty electric and a lot of fun to play in front of.”

Left Wing Rick Nash
Commenting on Detroit…
“They’ve got big defenders, they’ve got good forwards… We found a way during the season, but that doesn’t matter anymore. It’s a new season and we’re going to have to find a way.”

Commenting on the Blue Jackets…
“I think we’ve got enough motivation, this being our first time in the playoffs. No team can make it to where we are with one player. It takes 25 guys to figure this out and we know that. (Goaltender Steve Mason) Mase is a big part of the reason why we are here, but it takes 22 guys.”

Center Jason Williams
Commenting on any advice he’s passed along about the Red Wings…
“Knowing the other side (Detroit) pretty well, a couple of guys have asked me some questions about certain players and I just tried to give them the best information that I can.”

Commenting on being a part of Columbus’ first playoff appearance…
“It’s great for this organization. It’s been a long time coming for the fans and the organization itself. We’re happy we’re here in the playoffs, but we want to make sure that we can make it a long playoff run.”

Commenting on what it will take to be successful in the playoffs…
“I think it’s just being confident in yourself and just doing all the little things. Don’t try to do too much, just go out there and play your game and do the things that you have done to get you this far and what’s made you successful so far and got you to the playoffs. You have to step up to the plate, but at the same time you have to be confident in yourself to make plays and to make good decisions.”
