CBJ Adopt-A-School Kickoff: Avondale

by Jack Lyttle / Columbus Blue Jackets

Stinger and Blue Jackets radio analyst Bob McElligott entertained 300 students during the kickoff of the Blue Jackets Adopt-a-School program at Avondale Elementary in Columbus last month.

Rollerblading into the gym to enthusiastic chants of “Stinger! Stinger! Stinger!” from the students, our favorite mascot and Bob engaged the kids in discussions about hockey goals, academic goals, and personal goals.

They emphasized the importance of staying active, eating right, and reading as ways to keep your mind and body sharp.

Fourteen special students were honored at the assembly for achieving perfect attendance during the 2011-12 school year.

April Knight, Avondale’s principal, was also awarded a special banner to celebrate the partnership between the Jackets and Avondale.

"(The program with the Blue Jackets) is showing my kids that they are very important and that other people recognize that,” Knight said. “With the Blue Jackets behind them, I think we’re going to see a lot of kids working very hard to achieve their goals."

Stinger and Bob promised to return to the school at the end of the year and award special Blue Jackets Prize Packs to students who achieve perfect attendance this year.

"The Blue Jackets being here was my favorite thing about today,” Derek Daggett, Avondale Elementary School 5th Grader, said. “My goal for this year is to go to school every day and be a good learner."
