Canada Survives a Scare and Turns Attention to Sunday's Game vs. USA

by Jeff Rimer / Columbus Blue Jackets

February 19

Wow!! Rick Nash and Canada avoided what would have been another upset to Switzerland last night with Sydney Crosby's game winning shootout goal in the Olympic preliminary round. Having been born in Toronto and witnessed what is referred to as the "Greatest Hockey Game in History," the final game in the '72 Russia Canada Series, the talk north of the border about these Olympic Hockey games is it would have been a disaster had Canada lost to the Swiss. The pressure and the anticipation of Canada winning a gold medal on home soil is INCREDIBLE! Canadian hockey fans expect the Canadian Team's victory in the Gold Medal Final a week from Sunday to be a slam dunk... but wait a minute!!!!!

As associate head coach Ken Hitchcock told me this morning in a phone conversation. "The top six teams are too close, there are too many good teams in the Olympic Tournament." Hitchcock added. "We will be better, but the goalies can make a huge difference, just look what Halak was able to do last night leading Slovakia to an upset shootout win over the Russians."

Speaking before, as you might expect, going to watch video... Hitchcock said we should expect to see plenty of overtimes and even shootouts over the next 10 days.

Hitchcock had high praise for Team USA and again reiterated his comment about goaltending, adding Sunday's game could come down to which Team, Canada or the U.S., gets the better netminding.

Before we ended the conversation and hung up... Team Canada's "EYE IN THE SKY" offered this gem... "Sunday could be The GREATEST DAY IN HOCKEY HISTORY with the teams oh so close... Canada matched up against the United States, the Russians facing the Czechs and the Finns take on the Swedes."

Wow again! I can't wait!!
